Description
Rudolph Zeppelin III, also known as Rudolph Gerhardt Zeppelin III, is a key supporting character in the anime ZOIDS: Chaotic Century and its continuation in ZOIDS: Guardian Force. He is introduced as the Crown Prince of the Guylos Empire and the grandson of the ruling Emperor Zeppelin II. As the recognized heir, he carries the Imperial Ring, the traditional symbol of the empire's succession, a responsibility that places him at the center of imperial politics while he is still a child.
In terms of background, Rudolph is raised within the imperial court and shares a close bond with his grandfather, who trusts him as his successor. When Emperor Zeppelin II dies during the empire's war with the Helic Republic, Rudolph inherits the throne despite his youth. His first major act as the new ruler is to declare an immediate ceasefire, broadcasting the order across the empire and even to the Zoids actively engaged in combat. This decision halts the war and forces Regent Gunther Prozen, the leader of the empire's expansionist faction who had been driving the conflict, to abandon his military campaign. Prozen, however, refuses to accept peace and plots to assassinate Rudolph while framing the Republic for the crime, hoping to claim the throne for himself through the late emperor's will. The assassination attempt is inadvertently prevented when the bandits Rosso and Viola kidnap the prince for ransom. Their abduction saves his life, and his subsequent journey to return to the imperial capital of Guygalos and reclaim his rightful position becomes a major part of the story. During this journey he meets Van Flyheight and his companions, who agree to help escort him home.
Rudolph's personality is defined by a combination of youthful warmth and a strong sense of duty. He is eager, friendly, polite, and well-mannered, and he genuinely enjoys socializing and going on adventures. He is also notably naive, having spent most of his life sheltered within the palace, and he consistently prefers reasoning and peaceful solutions over fighting, even when dealing with enemies such as Raven and Prozen. He deeply cares for the Guylos Empire and hates seeing others around him hurt, often taking the suffering of his companions personally. Despite his gentle nature, he is determined and brave. He repeatedly attempts to escape his captors, risks his own safety to protect his friends, and refuses to give up his claim to the throne even when threatened. His emotional vulnerability is also visible, as he openly grieves for his grandfather and struggles with feelings of guilt when his presence endangers others.
His motivations are rooted in a desire to end pointless bloodshed and to restore legitimate imperial rule. He wants to reach Guygalos before Prozen can consolidate power, and he is willing to fight for his country when necessary. After taking the throne, his goals shift toward maintaining the peace between the empire and the Republic, leading him to work alongside Republic President Camford to establish the Guardian Force, a joint military organization meant to combat threats to the newly established peace.
In the overall story, Rudolph serves as a central figure around whom much of the political conflict revolves. His ceasefire declaration changes the course of the war, and his survival and return to the capital are essential to preventing Prozen from seizing the empire. He interrupts Prozen's coronation and joins the battle against the Death Saurer, piloting a Royal Saber Tiger alongside his allies. After the conflict ends, he takes his place as emperor, and in the Guardian Force portion of the story he appears as a young ruler working to secure stability between the two nations.
His key relationships shape his development significantly. Van Flyheight acts as a role model and mentor; Van teaches Rudolph how to pilot a Zoid and earns his complete trust, with Rudolph looking up to him and believing in his abilities. Rosso and Viola, who begin as his kidnappers, eventually become his protectors and loyal companions. Prozen is his primary adversary, and the conflict between them defines much of Rudolph's journey. Raven, Prozen's ace pilot, also threatens him, yet Rudolph still hopes to reason with his enemies rather than destroy them. He also forms bonds with the other members of Van's group, including Irvine, who saves him on multiple occasions, and Doctor D. Later, in the Guardian Force era, he has a fiancee named Mary-Anne and works closely with political figures such as President Camford and the loyal chancellor Homalev.
Rudolph develops considerably over the course of the anime. He begins as a sheltered prince who is devastated by his grandfather's death and inexperienced with the world outside the palace. Through his journey, he gains practical knowledge, learns to pilot Zoids under Van's guidance, and gradually becomes a more decisive and responsible leader. He demonstrates this maturity when he refrains from ordering a counterattack that could harm a hostage political leader, when he insists on upholding imperial tradition despite threats against his life, and when he willingly takes part in battle for the sake of his country. By the end of the story, he has grown into a capable young emperor committed to peace rather than conquest.
His notable abilities are primarily political and personal rather than combat oriented. He possesses a strong sense of leadership and diplomatic instinct, shown through his ceasefire declaration and his role in founding the Guardian Force. He is also a competent Zoid pilot for his age, having learned the basics from Van. He pilots machines such as the Command Wolf, the Royal Saber Tiger, and a Sinker, and during the Guylos Grand Prix he competes secretly under the alias Masquerade, demonstrating enough skill to closely follow an experienced racer and hold his own in the event. His greatest strengths, however, are his courage, resilience, and unwavering concern for the people around him, qualities that allow him to face threats far beyond what a child of his age would normally be expected to endure.
