Description
Izumo no Okuni is a significant supporting character in Samurai Deeper Kyo, appearing early in the story and maintaining a presence throughout. She is a beautiful young woman who first encounters the protagonist group by claiming to be a former acquaintance of Kyoshiro Mibu, stating that the two had spent a night together. However, this is eventually revealed to be a pretense; her true interest lies not in the gentle medicine seller Kyoshiro, but in the fierce warrior known as Demon Eyes Kyo, whom she has been actively seeking.

Okuni is characterized by her bold and unapologetic personality. She is confident in her abilities and openly declares her obsessive adoration for Kyo, going so far as to state that even being hated by him would bring her happiness. While claiming to be a priestess, she operates primarily as what is described as the best informer in Japan, using her skills to gather critical information for the group. Her primary motivation throughout the story is to assist Kyo in recovering his original body, which was sealed away after his legendary battle at Sekigahara. She plays a crucial role early in the narrative when she deliberately triggers Kyo's awakening from Kyoshiro's personality by uttering the name "Sakuya," a word that holds deep and potent meaning for the demon-eyed swordsman.

Her relationships with the main cast are defined by her singular focus on Kyo. She joins Kyo's team and follows him persistently, though her interactions with the other bounty hunter, Yuya Shiina, often carry an undercurrent of rivalry, as Okuni notes Yuya's childish nature regarding her perception of Kyo. Despite her self-serving declaration of love for Kyo, she is fiercely loyal and does not hesitate to put herself in danger for his sake, once even joining the Junishinsho as Indara II to further her goals.

Throughout the series, Okuni demonstrates notable development, moving from a mysterious femme fatale to a trusted, if unconventional, ally. She proves her strategic value on multiple occasions. While not possessing the overwhelming supernatural combat power of characters like Kyo or the Four Emperors, she is far from helpless. She is capable of defending herself against dangerous foes, once defeating a pack of wolves on her own. Her primary ability in combat involves the use of tekogen, or iron strings, which she wields as an effective and surprising weapon. Despite knowing a great deal about Kyo's past, as well as the histories of Kyoshiro and Sakuya, she typically speaks only in vague hints, revealing information sparingly. She faces powerful enemies, including Taihaku of the Five Stars, and though she cannot defeat them, she proves resourceful in espionage and survival. Her role often positions her as a messenger and spy, crucial for the logistical battles against the powerful Mibu clan.
