Description
In the anime Corrector Yui, the character known as Ai-chan, or i-chan, is a pivotal figure introduced in the second season. Her background is deeply rooted in the personal history of another main character, Ai Shinozaki. Ai-chan was originally created by Shintaro Shinozaki, Ai's father, as a specialized mail software program designed for his daughter. Her appearance was modeled after the main character of a picture book created by Ai's mother, Azusa, giving her a significant emotional and familial connection from the start. Unlike the other Corrector software programs who lacked emotions initially, Ai-chan was imbued with them from the time of her creation. A tragic turn of events led to her being captured and experimented on by the antagonist Ryo Kurokawa, who exposed her to powerful computer viruses. This process turned her into a host for the Buggles virus, a major threat in the second season. Although she managed to escape with Azusa's help, the ordeal caused her to lose her memories of her purpose as mail software, causing her to wander the ComNet in a lost state.
Personality-wise, Ai-chan presents as a sweet and innocent young girl, always seen clutching a teddy bear named Kuma-chan. However, her traumatic experiences have made her deeply sensitive and fearful. She possesses the unique ability to read the emotions and hearts of others. This power dictates her behavior: she will open her heart and respond warmly to those who sincerely open their hearts to her, like the protagonists Yui Kasuga and Haruna Kisaragi. Conversely, she flees in fear from those who keep their hearts closed, which is the primary reason Ai Shinozaki struggles to find her for much of the season.
Her role in the story is that of a catalyst and the central mystery of the second season. Her lost, wandering presence in the ComNet is directly linked to the resurgence of the Buggles virus, as her tears unknowingly spread the infection. The search for the missing little girl, as Ai-chan is often called, is the main motivation for Ai Shinozaki, who believes finding her is the key to waking her comatose mother. Furthermore, Ai-chan's existence and her teddy bear, Kuma-chan, are directly responsible for Ai Shinozaki becoming a Corrector, as Kuma-chan stole a special device, a ComCon, for her to use.
Her key relationships are central to the plot. Her bond with Kuma-chan is profound; the bear often moves on its own to protect her when she is unconscious. Her creator, Shintaro Shinozaki, represents her origin and the loving intent behind her creation. Her connection to Azusa, whose picture book she was modeled from, is a thread that ties her to the real world. Finally, her relationship with the human Corrector Ai Shinozaki is the climax of her arc; it is only when Ai learns to open her own heart, inspired by Yui, that she is able to approach Ai-chan without fear and initialize the Buggles virus, freeing her.
Throughout the second season, Ai-chan undergoes significant development, though it is largely a restoration rather than a change. Her arc concludes when she is initialized by Corrector Ai, which eradicates the Buggles virus from her system and returns her to a pure state. This process also allows her to deliver a long-lost email from Shintaro, providing closure and restoring her original function.
Her notable abilities include the power to sense the emotions of others, a gift that is both a strength and a source of great fear for her. As a program, she has the capability to go anywhere within the ComNet, even appearing in highly secure locations like air control centers. Uncontrollably, her tears can produce and spread the Buggles virus, making her an unwitting source of chaos until she is healed.
