TV-Series
Description
John Bacchus is the mayor of Sakurami City and the holder of the Eleventh Future Diary. A Westerner in a prominent political position in Japan, he cuts an imposing figure, typically dressed in fine clothes and wearing a distinctive hat and glasses. He is a highly calculating, manipulative, and strategic individual who does not hesitate to use his official authority for his own ruthless ends. While he can present a polite and gentlemanly facade, this masks a cold and ambitious nature. He is the mastermind behind the very concept of the Future Diary survival game, having originally proposed the system to Deus Ex Machina as a means to elevate humanity to a higher level, inspired by the ideals of past empires like Rome and Germany. His primary goal is to win the survival game and claim the position of god, using his advantageous position to achieve this above all else.

His role in the story is that of a powerful main antagonist, revealed late in the series as the final major hurdle for the protagonists. He leverages his political power to dismantle an orphanage called Mother's Home, run by the Eighth Diary Holder, in order to force her cooperation. He then connects her Multiplication Diary to a supercomputer called HOLON III, granting the entire populace of Sakurami City sub-diaries, which he can then monitor. This strategy effectively turns all citizens into his eyes and ears, giving him a near-omniscient advantage over other Diary Holders.

His key relationships are primarily transactional. He collaborates with Deus Ex Machina, the god of time and space, as the architect of the survival game. He exploits Kamado Ueshita, the Eighth Holder, for her diary's multiplication ability, holding her captive to achieve his plan. He is directly opposed to the story's protagonists, Yukiteru Amano and Yuno Gasai, as well as the Ninth Holder, Minene Uryu. However, in the third timeline, having foreseen his defeat, he chooses to abandon the Future Diary project and instead supports Kamado Ueshita, with whom he eventually develops a romantic relationship. His development across timelines shows a shift from an ambitious, ruthless god-seeker in the second world to a more pragmatic and cooperative figure in the third, who learns from his previous failure. In the OVA Redial, his persistent attempts to propose new games to select a god, always rigged in his favor, become a source of comic relief and are rejected by Deus.

John Bacchus wields the Watcher diary. This diary has the ability to peer into the future predictions of other Future Diaries, including the sub-diaries created by the Eighth's power. This allows him to track his enemies, anticipate their strategies, and prepare countermeasures. However, the Watcher diary has significant vulnerabilities. It is susceptible to misinformation, as the entries of other diaries are not fixed and can be altered, allowing clever opponents to feed him false data. Furthermore, it cannot predict the future of ordinary people who do not own a diary, nor can it foresee the actions of individuals like Yuno Gasai, whose own diary does not record her personal future. Beyond his diary, Bacchus commands immense power through his position as mayor, including a private security force, access to advanced technology like the HOLON supercomputer, and the ability to influence city policy for his benefit.
