Description
Chin-Yun Li is a recurring character who first appears in the anime Beyblade: Metal Masters. He is a member of the Chinese team Wang Hu Zhong, where he serves as the self-proclaimed vice-leader and is a close friend and follower of the team's leader, Dashan Wang. Chin-Yun was raised and trained at the Beylin Temple in China alongside Dashan, who is his source of inspiration.
Physically, Chin-Yun is one of the youngest and smallest characters in the series, comparable to bladers like Kenta and Yu. He has peach skin and reddish-brown eyes. His most distinctive features are his dark blue hair, which is tied back into a braided ponytail, and his traditional attire. He wears a purple kimono or changshan with red trim and yellow cuffs, featuring a dark orange circle with a red gecko emblem, along with white pants and brown boots with purple accents. He also wears a purple hat with a yellow trim and a green jade prayer bead necklace.
In terms of personality, Chin-Yun is a very serious and intense blader. Despite his small stature, he has a commanding presence and inspires respect from those around him. He is extremely loyal to his country of China and to his best friend, Dashan Wang, holding a strong disdain for those he perceives as disloyal, such as his teammate Chao Xin who refuses to train at the Beylin Temple. He is quite talkative and often acts as the spokesperson for his team when Dashan is not present. A notable quirk is that he tends to refer to himself in the third person.
Chin-Yun's primary motivation is to find a worthy challenge in battle. He has a habit of taunting his opponents to provoke them into unleashing their full power and rage. He is also deeply driven to support Dashan's ambitions and help create a new legacy for their team, seeing his own battles as a way to honor his friend's dreams. He shows a softer, more vulnerable side when facing defeat, particularly after losing to Klaus of Team Excalibur, which ended his team's run in the tournament.
Throughout the story, Chin-Yun plays a significant role as both a rival and an ally to the main protagonists. He and his teammate Mei-Mei first travel to Japan to scout the competition, where they trick and battle Gingka Hagane and Masamune Kadoya. Later, his team, Wang Hu Zhong, faces Gingka's team, GanGan Galaxy, in the first round of the World Championships. In a key match, Chin-Yun battles Tsubasa Otori; despite being overwhelmed when Tsubasa taps into a mysterious dark power, Tsubasa self-destructs, giving Chin-Yun the win. After their initial defeat, Wang Hu Zhong enters and wins a consolation tournament to re-enter the competition, where Chin-Yun is ultimately defeated by the powerful Klaus. Following the tournament, he and his team join forces with others to stop the villainous Dr. Ziggurat's plans before returning to the Beylin Temple.
His key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Dashan Wang is his strongest, as he sees Dashan as his inspiration and fights to uphold his legacy. He works closely with his teammate Mei-Mei, frequently partnering with her in tag-team battles. In contrast, his relationship with fellow team member Chao Xin is poor, as he views Chao Xin as cocky and dishonorable for not being loyal to their temple's training. Over the course of the series, he and his team develop a strong friendship and rivalry with GanGan Galaxy, ultimately becoming their supporters.
Chin-Yun's development sees him start as a confident, taunting blader who takes great pride in his team's strength. After early victories but ultimately facing powerful defeats, he experiences disappointment and vulnerability, but he is consistently reassured and motivated by Dashan to continue striving for their legacy. His journey emphasizes the importance of teamwork, loyalty, and resilience in the face of failure.
In battle, Chin-Yun wields the beyblade Thermal Lacerta WA130HF. His bit-beast is a lizard named Lacerta. He is known for his special moves, which include Lizard One-Hundred Violent Slashes and his most powerful technique, the Tempestuous Whirlwind Sword, where Lacerta slams the opponent with its tail while his beyblade attacks covered in a pink aura.
