Description
Docteur Ziggurat is the primary antagonist of the Beyblade: Metal Masters story. He is a scientist of considerable ambition who serves as the CEO and chairman of Hades Incorporated, the owner of the HD Academy training facility, and the inventor of the Arrangement System. He is also the founder and leader of the American representative team, Star Breaker. His physical appearance is distinctive, characterized by a tall build, black hair, a small goatee, and orange triangular spectacles that he always wears. He is often seen in a long black suit and dark pants, and he sometimes carries a small, rabbit-like pet squirrel.
Before the events of the series, Ziggurat had careers as a mental and energy doctor. He eventually withdrew from all professional federations and associations to found the HD Academy and pursue his own scientific goals. His personality is defined by a cold, manipulative, and arrogant nature. He views people not as individuals but as test subjects for his experiments, showing no remorse for the psychological or physical harm he causes. This is most evident when he blackmails the blader Zeo Abyss, threatening the life of his hospitalized friend Toby to force Zeo to battle, and later brainwashing Toby into a mindless state to serve his purposes. Ziggurat is a man who believes that science can unlock a person's full potential, yet he primarily uses his discoveries for control and personal gain. He considers himself superior to others, once dismissing the physicist Albert Einstein in comparison to his own genius while explaining the power of his ultimate Beyblade. Despite his calm and calculating demeanor for most of the story, he ultimately reveals a deeply cowardly side, attempting to flee and deny responsibility when his inventions spiral out of control.
Ziggurat’s primary motivation is to prove the supremacy of his scientific methods and to achieve his grand vision, which shifts over the course of the narrative. Initially, he presents his work as a way to solve the world's energy crisis. He seeks to harness Beyblades as an alternative energy source, a concept he calls the Spiral Force. To this end, he creates the Arrangement System, a process designed to push Bladers to their physical and mental limits to gather combat data. However, after successfully developing the Spiral Force, his true mercenary nature is revealed when he announces his intention to sell the doomsday device to the highest bidder, regardless of the consequences. His role is further expanded when it is revealed that he was the unseen mastermind behind the actions of Doji, the primary villain of the previous season, having orchestrated the search for the forbidden Bey, Lightning L-Drago.
His key relationships are all transactional and manipulative. He is the superior of Doji, whom he considers a tool who became too obsessed with power to think objectively. He holds a clinical interest in the powerful bladers Ryuga and Gingka, viewing their extraordinary Beys, L-Drago and Pegasus, as the primary sources of data needed to perfect his Spiral Force. He controls the members of Team Star Breaker—Zeo, Damian, and Jack—through a combination of the brainwashing Arrangement System and blackmail, turning them into instruments for his research. His relationship with Zeo is particularly cruel, as he exploits the friendship between Zeo and Toby, keeping Toby in a coma as leverage before erasing his mind entirely to create his ultimate Blader, Faust.
Throughout the story, Ziggurat remains a shadowy puppet master, preferring to observe his plans from a distance rather than engage in battles himself. His major development occurs when his ultimate creation, the Spiral Force, begins to melt down after being damaged. As the city of Hades begins to collapse, his composed facade completely crumbles into panic and cowardice, making excuses for his actions and attempting to flee alone. In his final confrontation, he is defeated in a Beyblade battle by Zeo, the very person he had manipulated for so long.
While he is a scientist first and a Blader second, Docteur Ziggurat does possess and use a Beyblade named Spiral Capricorn 90MF. It is an Attack-type Bey. However, he is not portrayed as a particularly powerful or accomplished Blader, and he typically relies on his devices and subordinates to do his fighting. His only shown battle ends in a straightforward defeat at the hands of Zeo.
