Description
Doji, known in Japan as Daidoji, is a major antagonist in the anime Beyblade: Metal Fury, part of the Metal Saga. He first appears as the leader of the Dark Nebula organization, a group that seeks to harness the dark power of Beyblades for world domination. In Metal Fury, Doji returns after being absent during the Metal Masters season, bearing the physical scars of his previous encounter with Ryuga and Lightning L-Drago. His appearance is altered: he now wears a monocle over one eye, the other covered by his hair with a scar running through it, and he relies on a walking cane and an artificial leg. His attire becomes more old-fashioned, consisting of a long grey coat and a frilly white cravat, reflecting his damaged state and his continued scheming.
Doji's personality is marked by a cold, polite, and condescending demeanor. He rarely shows genuine seriousness, even when facing powerful opponents, and often addresses people in a patronizing manner. He is extremely cruel, as demonstrated by his habit of feeding weaker members of Dark Nebula to L-Drago as punishment. He is highly manipulative, using his intellect to play on others' emotions and provoke them into actions that serve his goals. He takes great pleasure in taunting his enemies, particularly Ryuga, by reminding him of his role as a pawn or by angering him to disrupt plans. Despite his outward calm, Doji harbors obsessive tendencies, such as his claimed hatred of cacti because they cannot be hugged, which suggests a deeper frustration with things he cannot possess or control.
Doji's primary motivation is the pursuit of ultimate power and control, often through the manipulation of powerful Bladers. He initially seeks to use Ryuga and the forbidden bey L-Drago to rule the world, but after being nearly killed by Ryuga's betrayal, he shifts his focus to the revival of the god of destruction, Nemesis. In Metal Fury, he acts as a key agent for Hades Inc., locating Rago and the other Nemesis Bladers and bringing them to Pluto at the mystic ruins. His goal is to align himself with the most powerful force available, showing a survival instinct and a willingness to serve greater evils to achieve his ends.
In the story of Metal Fury, Doji serves as a secondary antagonist who facilitates the main threat of Nemesis. He reappears after a long absence and uses his knowledge of Ryuga and the legendary Bladers to manipulate events. He attempts to anger Ryuga during the battle against the Zeus Barrier, hoping to break the alliance of the legendary Bladers. His role is that of a schemer and a catalyst, rather than a direct combatant, though he does engage in battles when necessary.
Key relationships include his former partnership with Ryuga, which ended with Ryuga's attack on him; his servitude to Pluto and later to Rago; and his ongoing animosity toward Gingka Hagane and his friends. He treats Ryuga with a mix of condescension and respect, recognizing his power while never fully trusting him. He also has a connection to Yu Tendo, whom he once employed, and to Benkei Hanawa, to whom he offered Dark Bull. Doji's development across the series shows him evolving from a confident businessman and leader of Dark Nebula into a physically broken yet still cunning manipulator, and later, in Shogun Steel, he returns as a digital entity, demonstrating his persistence.
Notable abilities include his strategic mind and skill as a Blader; his bey is Dark Wolf, a balance-type bey that he uses effectively in battles, though he often relies on deception and manipulation rather than direct force. He is also able to survive severe injuries and adapt his methods, showing resourcefulness and a strong will. In Metal Fury, his taunting and psychological warfare are his primary weapons, as his physical condition limits his combat prowess. Overall, Doji is a persistent and calculating villain whose actions have far-reaching consequences for the world of Beyblade.
