Description
Aonuma Kiriha is a central character in the later story arcs of the Digimon Xros Wars anime, first appearing as a rival to the main protagonist. He is a seventh-grade student who, like the other human characters, was drawn into the Digital World. In the human world, Kiriha was born into privilege as the son of the president of the Aonuma Financial Group, a large corporation. His father was a strict man who drilled into Kiriha from a young age the belief that the weak have no value, while his mother was a kinder, more gentle presence he would turn to for comfort. This upbringing instilled in him a deep-seated drive for power and self-sufficiency.

This drive was cemented by tragedy. When Kiriha was ten years old, both of his parents died in an accident. In his final moments, his father begged his son to become stronger. Following their deaths, the relatives who had once been kind and his father’s trusted business associates betrayed the family, seizing their home and fortune. This experience left Kiriha with a profound trauma, reinforcing his father's lesson that weakness leads to ruin and that partners and friends are ultimately untrustworthy. Consumed by a desire to prove himself and to create a world where only the strong exist, he was a perfect candidate when the series' main antagonist offered him a blue Xros Loader, giving him the means to command his own army in the Digital World.

As the commander of the Blue Flare army, Kiriha is initially presented as cold, calculating, and obsessed with strength. He operates with a ruthless military efficiency, believing that any Digimon or person who is not strong enough to be useful is worthless. This is starkly illustrated early on when he uses a Golemon for a single DigiXros and then discards it, an act that horrifies the more empathetic hero, Taiki Kudou. Kiriha shows little empathy and keeps even his own partner Digimon at an emotional distance, believing that attachment is a weakness. His primary interest in Taiki stems from recognizing the other boy's potential and strength; he repeatedly attempts to force Taiki to become his subordinate, seeing him as a valuable asset to his own ambitions.

Kiriha's role in the story is initially that of a direct rival and occasional, self-interested ally to Taiki's Xros Heart. He will offer assistance only when it serves his own goals, such as when he helps Xros Heart in exchange for Taiki's submission, immediately withdrawing his support when the offer is refused. He has a complex relationship with fellow general Nene Amano, recognizing her from the beginning. They form a tactical alliance, but Kiriha breaks it off when she attempts to force him to torture a defeated enemy for information, declaring such an act to be beneath him. This moment reveals that despite his cold exterior, he operates under a strict, self-defined code of honor.

Kiriha's key relationships are the primary catalysts for his development. His bitter rivalry with Taiki Kudou forces him to constantly confront a different philosophy of strength, one based on trust and bonds rather than power alone. The Digimon Deckerdramon plays a pivotal role, sensing a deep, hidden capacity for love and loneliness within Kiriha's heart and choosing to join Blue Flare because of it. His partnership with his own Digimon, particularly Greymon and MailBirdramon, also evolves; while he initially claims he would abandon them if they could not save themselves, he later risks his life to save MetalGreymon from the enemy NeoVamdemon. It is through these connections, and by being forced to confront the painful memories of his past, that Kiriha begins to understand that true strength is not found in isolation, but in the bonds forged with trusted comrades.

By the time of the Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time, Kiriha has undergone a significant change. He has become much more cooperative, acting as a true ally to Taiki and the reformed Xros Heart army. He travels to America and later returns to Japan to help investigate the mysterious DigiQuartz, showing a level of selflessness and teamwork that would have been unthinkable for him at the beginning of his journey. While he retains his tactical brilliance and pride, he has shed much of his earlier cruelty, having learned that the strength of one's heart and the support of friends are the most powerful forces of all.

Regarding his notable abilities, Kiriha is distinguished by his exceptional tactical and military genius, which allows him to analyze battlefields and devise effective strategies that often outmaneuver his foes. His strength is not just strategic, however; he possesses surprising physical power, demonstrated when he is able to shatter the core of the enemy Gravity Planet with his bare hands. As a Xros Heart general, his primary tool is his blue Xros Loader, which he uses to command his army and perform DigiXros, the series' signature fusion technique. His signature DigiXros combines his two main partner Digimon, Greymon and MailBirdramon, to form the powerful MetalGreymon. This form can further evolve into the even more formidable DeckerGreymon when combined with his ally Deckerdramon.
