TV-Series
Description
Pyromaniac is a cyberbrain virus broker who appears in the Pyrophoric Cult arc, the two-episode conclusion of Ghost in the Shell: Arise Alternative Architecture. He deals in the memory-altering computer virus known as Fire Starter and is described as a devotee of that virus, a believer in its potential who works to spread it. United States military intelligence identifies him as a man of South American descent named Galvez, though little else about his personal history is known. He is known to recite passages from a work called The Angel of Fire, which suggests an ideological or quasi-religious attachment to the virus and the ideas behind it.
In the story, Pyromaniac operates at the center of a criminal network that distributes Fire Starter. The arc takes place in January 2029, when an airliner crash in Niihama kills several researchers connected to the virus. Once the investigation reveals the crash's link to Fire Starter, Kusanagi's unit, following a request from American military intelligence, begins tracking the broker known as Pyromaniac. He is pursued both for his role in the virus trade and for his efforts to destroy the head of Colonel Hozumi, a military intelligence figure being transported under escort. The pursuit of Pyromaniac exposes the wider conspiracy surrounding Fire Starter and the military and intelligence dealings tied to it.
Personality-wise, Pyromaniac is presented less as a frontline combatant and more as an underworld operator and ideologue. His devotion to Fire Starter and his habit of reciting The Angel of Fire indicate that he regards the virus as something more than a commodity. He believes in its capabilities and in the cause it represents. His contacts with Colonel Hozumi place him within the larger military and political maneuvering of the Arise storyline, where Fire Starter is used as a tool for manipulation, espionage, and assassination.
His key relationships are defined by this network. He has had contact with Hozumi, linking him to the Army Intelligence faction, and his activities draw the attention of both American military intelligence and Kusanagi's emerging team. His primary opposition comes from Kusanagi and her unit, who are tasked with securing him so that the full scope of the Fire Starter trade can be uncovered. He appears only within the Pyrophoric Cult arc and receives little personal development, but the information surrounding him and his capture serve as the connection between the Arise OVA series and the film Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie.
His notable abilities lie in the domain of cybercrime rather than physical combat. As a virus broker, he has access to and practical knowledge of Fire Starter, a weapon capable of infecting cyberbrains, invading a person's ghost, and implanting false memories. He is able to move through the black market of cyberweapons, maintain contact with military intelligence figures, and direct operations against high-value targets such as the transported head of Hozumi. Overall, Pyromaniac functions as a connecting figure who represents the distribution side of the Fire Starter threat.
