Description
Marianne vi Britannia, in the alternate universe of Code Geass: Nunnally in Wonderland, assumes the role of the Queen of Hearts. In this story, she is the wife of the King of Hearts, Charles zi Britannia, and rules over the castle that Nunnally must cross to find her way out of Wonderland. Her appearance retains the distinctive black hair and violet eyes of her original counterpart, but she is dressed in regal attire befitting a queen of a playing-card kingdom.
Her background as the Queen of Hearts draws on the fairy-tale archetype of a capricious, authoritarian ruler, but also carries echoes of her main-series personality. Like the original Marianne, she is a commoner by birth who rose to become empress, known for her sharp mind and fierce protectiveness of her children. In Wonderland, those traits manifest as a commanding presence and a love of games, especially croquet. She is not outright malevolent; rather, she is playful in a dangerous way, setting conditions for Nunnally’s passage that carry deadly stakes.
The Queen of Hearts appears when the King of Hearts refuses to let Nunnally traverse the castle. She intervenes, offering a deal: Nunnally may go through, but only if she plays a game of croquet. The penalty for losing is losing her head. This threat reflects the Wonderland tradition of harsh, arbitrary punishment, but also shows Marianne’s desire to test Nunnally’s wits and courage. Her motivation appears to be both entertainment and a genuine curiosity about the child, perhaps mirroring her care for her own children in the main story.
Her key relationships in this OVA include the King of Hearts, her husband, with whom she shares authority; the Knave of Hearts, V.V., who accompanies her; and her fellow royalty, the White King and Queen (Cornelia and Euphemia li Britannia) and the Red King and Queen (Schneizel el Britannia and Kannon Maldini). When the White Queen and Red King arrive and begin arguing over croquet rules, the Queen of Hearts’ attention is diverted, allowing Nunnally to slip away. This moment highlights her role as an obstacle that Nunnally must outmaneuver rather than confront directly.
Throughout the episode, the Queen of Hearts does not undergo any major development; her function is that of a gatekeeper and a source of comic-tension. She embodies the whimsical yet threatening authority of Wonderland, and her actions drive Nunnally to think quickly and rely on her allies. Her notable ability, in this context, is her absolute command over the castle and her willingness to enforce her rules with violence. In the main Code Geass timeline, Marianne possesses a Geass that allows her to transfer her consciousness into another person, but that power is not featured in Nunnally in Wonderland, where she is simply a queen in a fantasy setting.
Overall, the Queen of Hearts version of Marianne vi Britannia is a confident, playful, and dangerous ruler who uses games to test those who cross her path, reflecting the core traits of her original character while adapted to the Wonderland theme.
