Description
Kira Hayama serves as the main antagonist of Beyblade: Shogun Steel. He is a formidable blader affiliated with the organization DNA, where he is considered one of the most powerful members due to the organization's Evil Gene project, which enhances his natural abilities. Within DNA, he initially acts under the direction of Team Garcias alongside fellow blader Yoshio Iwayama.
Physically, Kira has an androgynous appearance with a large, spiked hairstyle of lightly dyed purple that features accents of green, pink, and aqua, resembling a crown. He wears a red hairband with gold pins. One of his most distinctive features is a black eyepatch over his left eye, which conceals a Beyblade tracker that can detect an opponent's beyblade during a battle. His right eye is golden in color. His attire consists of a revealing black jumpsuit with red and gold straps, long red gloves with gold orbs, and black boots with gold details.
Kira's personality is defined by his brutal and sadistic nature. He approaches battles with absolute confidence, never doubting that he will win, and he takes genuine pleasure in the pain and harm he inflicts on his opponents. He has been known to ridicule his adversaries with derogatory comments, often accompanied by grotesque facial expressions. Examples of his cruelty include injuring Shinobu's arm and throwing Eight with great force, finding amusement in their suffering. The anime version of Kira is portrayed as purely power-hungry, driven by a desire to bring other bladers under his control, which makes him even more sadistic than his manga counterpart, who had a more sympathetic backstory of being bullied as a child. His demeanor in battle is one of calm intimidation, as he shows no hesitation or remorse, even when turning against his own allies.
In the story, Kira enters the Neo Battle Bladers tournament as a representative of DNA. He initially wields the Dragon-Killer Bey, Berserker Behemoth SR200BWD, a powerful stamina-type beyblade. Dissatisfied with its performance, he discards it in search of something more powerful to satisfy his needs. He then acquires Gladiator Bahamut SP230GF, which he uses to devastating effect. During the tournament, he defeats Shinobu Hiryūin in a match that results in Shinobu being hospitalized and the stadium being wrecked. When his superiors in Team Garcias question his decision to abandon his original beyblade, Kira displays his growing independence and power by defeating Captain Arrow, Genjuro Kamegaki, and Spike Bourne in a three-on-one battle, showing no loyalty to the organization and subsequently trapping the Garcias in holding cells.
Kira's key relationships are primarily antagonistic. He has a complex dynamic with his DNA ally Yoshio Iwayama, who eventually sides with Kira against the Garcias. His primary rival in the story is the protagonist, Zyro Kurogane, who seeks to avenge Shinobu. Kira also serves as a counterpart to previous series antagonists such as Ryuga and Rago, possessing a darkly powered beyblade and taking over the evil organization he once worked for. After his defeat by Zyro at the climax of the tournament, Kira undergoes a reformation. He is freed from DNA's influence, retires from the organization, and along with other reformed DNA bladers, forms a team called Bridge to the Future (BTF) to compete for a chance to participate in the World Championships.
Kira is a highly skilled blader whose abilities are augmented by the Evil Gene. He is proficient with two different beyblades. With Berserker Behemoth, he can perform a special move called Iron Brave, where he and Behemoth glow with a dark purple aura before the bey releases a massive, light-purple gust of wind of immense strength that can send opposing beys flying. With Gladiator Bahamut, his power is such that he can effortlessly oppress three opponents simultaneously, showcasing his status as one of the most powerful bladers in the series.
