TV-Series
Description
Genjuro Kamegaki is a character from Beyblade: Shogun Steel who serves as a minor antagonist. He is a member of DNA, an organization that develops powerful beyblades and trains bladers to achieve its objectives. His surname, Kamegaki, is Japanese for "turtle fence," a reference to his beyblade's defensive nature. Genjuro is deliberately designed to pay homage to Max Tate from the original Beyblade series, and his beyblade, like Max's, is based on the Black Tortoise, one of the Four Symbols of Chinese astronomy known as Genbu in Japanese.
In terms of appearance, Genjuro has a distinctive and menacing look. He carries long, spiky blonde hair that gives the impression of a crown, with slanted eyelids and a pointed nose. His most notable feature is his very sharp teeth, which accentuate his eccentric demeanor. He is almost always seen chewing on a golden dandelion. His attire consists of a blue robe with a large white star, worn over a smaller green undershirt, and he completes his outfit with signature dark-green gloves that cover two fingers while leaving the remaining three exposed.
Genjuro's personality is characterized by confidence and a lack of intimidation in the face of skilled opponents. When he witnesses the blader Ren Kurenai swiftly defeat multiple competitors, he is not intimidated but impressed, and he immediately challenges her to a battle. This suggests a competitive nature and a desire to test his skills against worthy adversaries. As a member of DNA, he is also dutiful, reporting the outcomes of his battles to the organization's leaders and assuring them that events are proceeding according to their plans.
His role in the story is primarily as an antagonist who participates in the Neo Battle Bladers tournament. Genjuro's most significant early action is defeating Ren Kurenai, eliminating her from the competition using his beyblade's defensive capabilities and special move. However, his own tournament run ends when he battles Sakyo Kurayami for a place in the Final Eight. Despite his efforts, he is defeated and eliminated from the tournament. Following his tournament loss, he continues to be involved with DNA, engaging in training battles against fellow member Kira Hayama, where he is also beaten.
Genjuro's key relationships include his affiliation with the DNA organization and its members, such as Kira Hayama and others like Yoshio Iwayama and Spike Bourne. His rivalry with Ren Kurenai is particularly notable, as his defensive water-elemental beyblade serves as a natural counter to her attack-type fire-elemental beyblade. He also shares a competitive relationship with Sakyo Kurayami, who ultimately defeats him in the tournament. Genjuro participates in tag battles alongside fellow DNA members against various opponents, including the main protagonists Zyro Kurogane, Shinobu Hiryuin, and others.
Development-wise, Genjuro remains a consistent antagonist throughout the series, demonstrating loyalty to DNA's cause and a strong will to win. His defeats at the hands of Sakyo and Kira show that despite his abilities, he is ultimately outmatched by more powerful bladers. He continues to battle alongside DNA forces in large-scale confrontations later in the series, though his personal growth is limited.
Genjuro's notable abilities center entirely on his beyblade, Bandit Genbu F230TB. He employs a highly defensive battle strategy, instructing his bey to dodge enemy attacks rather than engage directly. When the time is right, he unleashes his bey's beast, the Black Tortoise, and executes his only known special move, which is called Spinning Shell Smash or Crushing Hammer depending on the source. In this move, the Black Tortoise hurls a large axe or hammer to strike the opponent's bey and hurl it out of the stadium, demonstrating that his defensive style conceals a powerful offensive capability.
