TV-Series
Description
Kikura Ken, also known as Gen Kikura, is a recurring character from the Beyblade series who serves as a memorable opponent for the main cast. His background is rooted in a genuine, if misguided, passion for environmental conservation. Originally based at Midsummer Beach, he took it upon himself to protect the shoreline from the damaging effects of litter. To achieve this, he disguised himself as a sea monster by covering himself in seaweed, using the frightening guise to scare away tourists who left trash behind. Initially a well-intentioned effort to preserve the beach's natural beauty, his actions eventually evolved from a simple warning system into a source of personal amusement. He grew to enjoy the loud reactions of his victims and continued his haunting antics for his own entertainment, turning his environmental mission into a form of mischief.

In terms of personality, Kikura is best described as eccentric and impulsive, bearing a notable resemblance to the character Tetsuya Watarigani from previous story arcs. He possesses an "insane" demeanor, often acting on wild impulses and displaying a peculiar kind of confidence in his abilities. His most prominent and defining behavioral quirk is his unfortunate habit of inadvertently revealing his own weaknesses during a Beyblade battle. When confident in his strategy, he tends to explain vital information about his Beyblade's capabilities or limitations directly to his opponent, seemingly unaware that he is handing them the key to defeating him until it is too late. Despite this flaw, he can be friendly and well-meaning, though his actions are often dictated by his own unusual logic.

Kikura's primary motivation is the protection of beaches from pollution, a goal he pursues with a singular focus. However, after being defeated and subsequently driven away from Midsummer Beach, his motivation shifts to include a desire for revenge against the protagonist, Zyro Kurogane, who bested him. Following this loss, he relocates to Metal Bey City, intending to apply his same scare tactics in a new environment and get revenge on Zyro.

Within the story, Kikura serves as an antagonist and a rival to the main group. He is first introduced as the mysterious "Sea Monster" terrorizing beachgoers. After his true identity is uncovered by Zyro and his friends, he engages in a Beybattle against Kite Unabara, which results in a stalemate. He is then soundly defeated by Zyro, who exploits the very weakness Kikura foolishly revealed during their fight. Following this defeat, he is forced to leave the beach. He later reappears in Metal Bey City, where he is swiftly defeated again, this time by Takanosuke Shishiya. Despite these losses, he continues to participate in the broader Blading community, eventually entering the Neo Battle Bladers tournament, though he is eliminated before reaching the final rounds.

Key relationships in his story are largely adversarial. His most significant dynamic is with Zyro Kurogane, who not only defeats him but also insults him by calling him "Mushroom," which Kikura finds deeply offensive. He battles Kite Unabara to a draw and is surprised and defeated by Takanosuke Shishiya when the latter independently discovers his Beyblade's weakness. Despite his defeats, he demonstrates a degree of respect for strength, as he later enrolls in a fierce training program led by Benkei Hanawa to improve his own skills after seeing the success of other Bladers.

Throughout his appearances, Kikura shows minimal personal development, as he continues to rely on the same tactics and reveal his secrets in battle. However, his trajectory does show him moving from an isolated figure operating alone on a beach to an active, if unsuccessful, competitor within the larger Blading world. His most notable ability is not a matter of skill, but of his Beyblade, Pirate Kraken A230JSB. This Beyblade is equipped with an Armor 230 Spin Track, which grants it an extremely high profile that effectively blocks low attacks, making it a formidable defensive and stamina type. His primary combat strategy relies on outlasting opponents in a stamina battle, as he boasted that his Beyblade could not be out-spun by any means. However, this defensive wall has a critical weakness: it is vulnerable to attacks coming from directly above, which is the method Zyro and Takanosuke both used to defeat him. Kikura himself is also an adept swimmer and diver, a necessary skill for his self-appointed role as a sea monster.
