Description
Izumi Curtis is a master alchemist and formidable martial artist who resides in the southern Amestrian town of Dublith, where she runs a butcher shop alongside her husband, Sig. Despite her extraordinary abilities, she takes great pride in identifying herself simply as a housewife when asked. Physically, she is a deceptively young-looking middle-aged woman with fair skin, dark eyes, a slender yet well-toned figure, and upper-back-length black hair typically worn in box braids. On the left side of her collarbone, she bears a Flamel tattoo.
Izumi is best known as the teacher who instructed Edward and Alphonse Elric in the fundamentals of alchemy and martial arts. Though she generally does not take on students, she accepted the Elric brothers' earnest plea to teach them, training them for approximately six months on a remote island. During this time, she grew to love them as deeply as if they were her own children, and she remained a long-term source of guidance and support throughout their journey.
Her personality is a complex blend of contradictory traits. On the surface, Izumi often appears fearsome, strict, and prone to swift acts of violence. Edward and Alphonse become terrified at the mere thought of angering her, knowing she is quick to deal out physical punishment when frustrated by their mistakes. Despite this aggressive exterior, she is remarkably caring, wise, and perceptive, always willing to help those in need, especially children. She advocates for self-reliance, believing in helping people make their own way and intervening only for those who have the will but not the means to help themselves. She holds great respect for hard work and frequently stresses that alchemists are still human with human limits, valuing the idea of using alchemy only for tasks that cannot be accomplished by hand. Izumi also seems to enjoy travel, a trait she may have passed on to Edward, as she is often found journeying outside her hometown.
Her motivations are deeply rooted in past tragedy. Years before taking on the Elric brothers, Izumi and Sig were expecting a child, but their son was stillborn. Grief-stricken, she attempted human transmutation in a desperate effort to revive him. The attempt failed, and as the toll for seeing the "Truth" behind the Gate of Alchemy, she lost several of her internal organs. This loss left her unable to bear children again and caused her to periodically cough up blood, especially after physical overexertion. This personal experience with forbidden alchemy is why she strictly forbade Edward and Alphonse from attempting human transmutation themselves, and she was horrified to later discover that they had repeated her mistake.
In the story, Izumi serves as a crucial source of wisdom and power. After learning what the Elric brothers had done, she initially expelled them as her students, yet she continued to help them whenever they needed it. Later, she meets Van Hohenheim, Edward and Alphonse's estranged father, who examines her and uses his knowledge to rearrange her damaged internal organs. Though he could not restore what she had lost, the procedure improved her blood circulation and relieved her chronic issues with hemorrhaging. She becomes one of the key individuals designated as a "human sacrifice" for the homunculus known as the Father, playing an active role in the final confrontation. She also aids the northern Briggs forces in their campaign against the central military and participates in the battle against the homunculus Sloth.
Izumi shares several important relationships. Her bond with her husband Sig is one of mutual strength and affection; he is a large, muscular man who matches her formidable nature, and they work together as partners both in their butcher shop and in battle. Her connection to Edward and Alphonse is that of a second mother, and they view the Curtis couple as the only parental figures they can rely on in the absence of their own parents. She also has a friendship with Major Alex Louis Armstrong, who respects her strength, and she earns the admiration of General Olivier Mira Armstrong for her capabilities.
Regarding her notable abilities, Izumi is considered among the strongest characters in the series. She is an extremely powerful martial artist, capable of subduing multiple enemies quickly, overpowering mountain bears with her bare hands, and even engaging homunculi such as Sloth in combat. As a result of seeing the Truth through her failed human transmutation, she gained the rare ability to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle. By merely pressing her palms together, she creates an energy circulation that allows her to transmute matter using her own will as a substitute for the necessary runes. This makes her transmutations instantaneous and highly versatile in combat. Her alchemy typically focuses on manipulating her immediate surroundings to her advantage, and like Edward, she favors creating spears to wield with deadly proficiency.
