Description
Alphonse Elric is one of the two main protagonists of the story, introduced as a young alchemist who, at the age of fourteen, faces an extraordinary circumstance. He is the younger brother of Edward Elric, and the two were born and raised in the rural town of Resembool. The defining event of Alphonse's life occurred four years before the start of the narrative, when he and Edward were ten years old. Driven by intense grief over the death of their beloved mother, Trisha, the brothers attempted to use forbidden human transmutation to bring her back to life. This attempt failed catastrophically. As a toll for breaking this natural law, Alphonse lost his entire physical body. In a desperate act to save him, Edward sacrificed his own right arm to perform a second transmutation, binding Alphonse's soul to a large, empty suit of armor. A blood seal, drawn by Edward on the inside of the armor's neck, now serves as the anchor tethering Alphonse's soul to the metal vessel; if this seal is completely damaged, he will cease to exist. This event is the central tragedy and motivation for both brothers.

In terms of personality, Alphonse serves as a calm and gentle foil to his older brother's more hot-headed and impulsive nature. He is consistently portrayed as kindhearted, patient, and compassionate, often acting as a mediator and voice of reason when Edward's temper flares, particularly over jokes about his short stature. Despite being trapped in a hulking, soulless suit of armor, Alphonse possesses a remarkable level of maturity and emotional intelligence that often surpasses that of his brother. However, this serene exterior conceals profound internal struggles. He is plagued by deep insecurities about his own existence, fearing that his memories might be false or that he has lost his humanity. He desperately craves the simple physical sensations he can no longer feel: the warmth of another person, the taste of food, and the ability to sleep. To cope, he keeps a mental list of all the foods he plans to eat once his body is restored. Despite this darkness, he retains a childlike innocence and a strong sense of empathy, which sometimes leads him to pick up stray cats and hide them inside his armor, much to his brother's annoyance.

Alphonse's primary motivation is to regain his original human body. This goal is shared with and inextricably linked to his brother Edward, who feels tremendous guilt for the state Alphonse is in. They travel together in search of the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary alchemical artifact they believe is the only thing powerful enough to undo the damage of their failed human transmutation. His role in the story during the first two episodes is as Edward's partner and equal. He accompanies his brother to the city of Lior (or Reole), where they investigate a priest performing apparent miracles. While Edward often takes the lead in confrontation and deduction, Alphonse acts as the supportive pillar, offering a different perspective and, when necessary, using his armored body as an imposing shield or a powerful combatant. He is directly involved in the action, helping to expose the priest's use of a fake Philosopher's Stone.

The most important relationship in Alphonse's life is with his older brother, Edward. Their bond is exceptionally strong and forms the emotional core of their journey. They support each other unconditionally, and Alphonse is one of the few people who can calm Edward down or challenge his decisions. He also shares a close bond with Winry Rockbell, their childhood friend and a skilled automail mechanic, who provides crucial support for Edward's prosthetics. His relationship with his master, Izumi Curtis, is also foundational; she taught him and Edward the basic principles of alchemy and combat, and her training is the reason he is such a skilled martial artist, with Edward even admitting that Alphonse has never lost to him in a fight.

Over the course of the journey, Alphonse experiences significant development, though the seeds of this are present from the beginning. His existence inside the armor gives him a unique perspective, and he often thinks more strategically than his impulsive brother. While he currently needs to draw a transmutation circle to perform alchemy like most practitioners, a latent ability to clap his hands to perform transmutations exists within him, locked behind the repressed memories of what he saw inside the Gate of Truth when he lost his body. His key relationships, particularly the deep trust he places in Edward, are tested and strengthened.

Alphonse possesses a number of notable abilities that make him a formidable alchemist and fighter. His soul-bound armor grants him superhuman durability and strength; he is impervious to bullets, does not feel pain, does not tire, and has no need to eat, breathe, or sleep. This makes him an exceptionally resilient combatant. He is also a master martial artist, having trained rigorously under Izumi Curtis. His hand-to-hand combat skills are so refined that he is considered a better fighter than his older brother. As an alchemist, he is highly skilled, proficient in transmuting objects for both offense and defense, such as creating stone pillars, battering rams, and weapons from the ground. His alchemical knowledge is encyclopedic, though he often takes a more conventional and precise approach compared to Edward's more creative and unconventional style. This combination of physical invulnerability, martial prowess, and alchemical skill makes Alphonse a powerful ally, even in his incomplete state.
