Description
Maria Abe is a supporting character in the anime Duel Masters Victory V, appearing as a classmate of the protagonist Katta Kirifuda in class 5-2 and serving as the class president. Her background is that of a stereotypical, rule-obsessed student who takes her role extremely seriously. She is known for her strict, no-nonsense personality, often using the catchphrases As a class president, I have to say... and No objections! She is exceedingly meticulous, even obsessing over minor details such as desk alignments within millimeter precision, and has been known to impose extreme order on her classmates, occasionally transforming them into blocky, retro-game-like figures as a result of her perfectionism. Her devotion to rules and discipline extends to her interactions with others, though she is notably intimidated by the homeroom teacher, Oguma-sensei.
Motivationally, Maria is driven by a desire to maintain structure and authority in her classroom, but her most prominent personal motivation is her intense, near-obsessive admiration for her classmate Leo Hyakujuu, whom she addresses as Leo-sama. This infatuation often influences her actions, such as attempting to create a kingdom for him when left in charge. Her role in the story is primarily that of a comedic foil; she frequently gets caught up in the absurd events of the series and often suffers mishaps or humiliation as a result of her rigid nature and unflattering appearance. Despite being a recurring character, her dueling abilities are notably poor, and she is acknowledged by other characters as a weak duelist. She occasionally participates in duels but rarely wins, and in one arc involving YARASHI, she is the only classmate besides Katta to avoid being turned into a card, albeit by luck, and is subsequently excluded from the main battle by her peers.
Key relationships include her classmates, particularly Katta, whom she often scolds, and Leo, whom she idolizes. She also interacts with the teacher Oguma-sensei, to whom she defers, and later, in subsequent series, appears as a middle school student and student council president. Her development across the franchise is minimal; she returns in later seasons such as Duel Masters VSRF with the same appearance and personality, still infatuated with Leo and still serving as a source of humor. Notably, her physical appearance is described as unconventional and unattractive, though she possesses an otherwise good figure. This contrast is played for comedic effect, such as when her back view initially charms male characters but her face is met with horror. Her notable abilities lie in her dueling style: she uses a light-civilization deck centered on the Meka Del Sol and Heavens Gate strategies, with her signature card being the Light of Perfection Perfect Madonna. However, her overall skill level remains low, and she never develops into a competitive duelist within the story.
