Description
George Black, often referred to by the nickname Bookman, is the Chief of the Europe Division for the Central Intelligence Agency’s National Clandestine Service. His background is somewhat atypical for a career intelligence officer. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, his original ambition was to become a scholar, focusing his studies on Classical Arabic literature. A planned career as a U.S. Marine was cut short by a back injury, after which he joined the CIA. During the Bosnian War, he worked as a case officer apprehending suspected war criminals, and it was during this time that Italian intelligence personnel gave him the nickname Burattinaio, or Puppeteer, a moniker that speaks to his operational style.

In terms of personality, George Black is defined by a calm, unshakeable demeanor. He rarely shows emotion, maintaining a composed and analytical front even under pressure. His former subordinate, R, describes him as having the obsession of a scholar, a persistent drive to investigate until he knows every detail of a given situation. Despite his controlled nature, he has a noted enjoyment of food, which he balances with a disciplined exercise routine to stay in shape. This combination of scholarly obsession and operational discipline makes him a formidable planner.

George Black is the mastermind behind a long-term intelligence operation known as Operation Undershaft. The primary goal of this operation is to infiltrate and manipulate the logistics network of HCLI, an international arms dealer, by focusing on Koko Hekmatyar, the youngest heiress of the powerful Hekmatyar family. To achieve this, he successfully recruited and inserted an agent, a former Italian Bersaglieri officer codenamed R, directly into Koko’s personal squad. His role in the story is that of a shadowy puppet master, one who prefers to work from a distance, pulling the strings of his assets to achieve strategic objectives for the United States. He lives with his wife and children in a suburb of Washington, D.C., presenting a facade of a normal family man.

Key relationships are central to his function. His connection with R is his most important, built on years of collaboration and mutual respect, a relationship closer than he has with his other agents. Conversely, his relationship with Hex, another CIA paramilitary officer he recruited, is more professional and distant. When Hex launches a rogue operation that threatens to kill Jonah, a member of Koko’s squad, and by extension destabilize Operation Undershaft, George makes a critical choice. He sides with R, ordering Hex to stand down. When she refuses, he provides support to R, helping Koko and Jonah escape, which directly leads to the annihilation of Hex’s team. He is reportedly shocked by Hex’s death, feeling as though he has been left without both of his arms. The death of R, who sacrificed himself to stop Hex, also leaves a significant mark on him.

Throughout the series, George Black exhibits specific notable abilities. His greatest talent is for recruitment and management; he has a unique skill for identifying, recruiting, and running agents for intelligence gathering, a capability that propelled his rise within the CIA. This talent earned him his various nicknames: Bookman, Adib which means Scholar in Arabic, and Burattinaio, which refers to his skillful manipulation of people as if they were puppets. He is also shown to be fluent in Arabic, a skill from his academic past. While his back injury prevents active field service, his strategic mind and control over a network of operatives make him one of the most powerful and dangerous figures in the series' intelligence community.
