Description
Jonathan Mar, more commonly known by the nickname Jonah, serves as a central figure in Jormungand Perfect Order. He is a young boy of West Asian descent, estimated to be around fourteen or fifteen years old, with a lean build, dark skin, silver hair, and red eyes. A small scar beneath his left eye is a subtle marker of his violent past.
Jonah was orphaned when an airstrike destroyed his home village, killing his parents. In the war-torn landscape that followed, he became a child soldier, fighting to survive and protecting other orphans in the same situation. This brutal upbringing forged him into a highly capable fighter, but also left deep psychological scars. He was eventually captured by Kasper Hekmatyar, an arms dealer whose weapons had been used in the attack on his village. Instead of killing the boy, Kasper struck a deal: Jonah would serve as a bodyguard for his sister, Koko Hekmatyar, in exchange for Kasper ensuring the safety and relocation of the remaining orphans under Jonah's care.
Personality-wise, Jonah is defined by a sharp internal contradiction. He harbors an intense, unwavering hatred for all weapons and the people who think of, make, sell, or use them, holding them responsible for the loss of his family and the destruction of his childhood. Despite this deep-seated loathing, he is a masterful user of firearms and military tactics, a necessity forced upon him by his environment. Externally, he presents a stoic and inexpressive facade, a trait born from years of trauma on the battlefield. However, glimpses of his buried youth occasionally surface; he shows genuine joy at simple, peaceful experiences such as seeing plush toys or visiting the beach for the first time, moments that highlight how much of a normal childhood he was denied. He is also not immune to childish fears, notably displaying a strong aversion to injections despite his tolerance for pain and injury in combat situations.
His primary motivation throughout the series is twofold. On a surface level, he complies with his role as Koko's bodyguard to honor the agreement that protects his former comrades. On a deeper level, he is constantly struggling with the hypocrisy of his existence, where his survival depends on the very instruments of death he despises. Koko herself seems to understand this essential part of him, and a key reason she brings him into her squad is to serve as her own shackle, a living reminder of the human cost of her trade, meant to keep her from losing her own humanity in her grand schemes.
Within the squad, Jonah's role is that of a frontline operative and a specialist in guerrilla tactics. His specific expertise lies in mountain warfare and field combat, where his ability to remain hidden, set traps, and navigate rugged terrain is exceptional. His fighting style initially reflected the all-or-nothing, self-sacrificing mentality of a child soldier, a tendency he works to overcome under the guidance of the squad's leader, Lehm. His key relationships are central to the narrative. His bond with Koko is complex; while he constantly criticizes her profession and her seemingly whimsical nature, he also grows to protect her with fierce loyalty, and she, in turn, often treats him with a teasing affection that he grudgingly tolerates. He has a profound, though mostly silent, respect for the veteran soldier Lehm, and a distant, antagonistic link to Kasper Hekmatyar, whose manipulations set his entire current path in motion.
In terms of development from the first season into Perfect Order, Jonah begins to slowly acclimate to a form of family within Koko's unit, allowing for rare moments of emotional warmth and laughter. He gradually moves away from his most reckless combat habits, learning to fight with more tactical discipline and a greater will to survive, rather than simply to trade his life for a kill. As the story progresses, he is forced to confront the nuances of Koko's ultimate, large-scale plan for world peace, challenging his previously black-and-white view of the world.
Despite his youth, Jonah's notable abilities put him on par with seasoned special forces operatives. He is an expert marksman with a preternatural sense of timing, capable of feats such as shooting an enemy at the exact moment they fire a rocket launcher to redirect the projectile. He is exceptionally resourceful, once using a grenade to deflect an anti-tank missile mid-flight. His physical stamina is remarkable, allowing him to participate in prolonged firefights without fatigue, and his metabolism is efficient enough to shrug off strong sedatives in a fraction of the expected time. His primary weapons include an FN FNC PARA assault rifle and a Browning High Power Mk.3 pistol, though he is proficient with numerous other firearms.
