Description
Nistro, known as Gauche in the original Japanese version, is a character in Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal II who initially serves as Mr. Heartland's left-hand man and a committee member responsible for overseeing the World Duel Carnival alongside his partner, Dextra. Their primary assignment under Heartland is to search for Number cards during the tournament. Nistro later resigns from that position to participate in the World Duel Carnival himself, with the goal of defeating Yuma Tsukumo and claiming the original Number before Kite Tenjo can. After the events of the tournament, he becomes a professional duelist and is recognized as the champion of Spartan City, with Dextra acting as his manager.
In terms of personality, Nistro is hot-headed, short-tempered, and high-spirited, approaching duels with an intensity that often pushes his opponents to their limits. He takes his duties seriously when it comes to punishing cheaters, but he tends to be less formal about his job than Dextra, which leads to frequent arguments between them. Despite these clashes, the two genuinely care for each other, and Nistro once activated a card solely to protect Dextra from damage during a duel. He loves dueling and holds those who dishonor it in contempt. In the Japanese version, he has a verbal habit of adding the phrase "nori" to his sentences. He is also openly competitive with Kite Tenjo, viewing him as a rival in collecting Numbers.
Nistro's appearance is marked by flame-shaped dark red hair with a lighter red fringe and purple eyes. He wears a black-and-dark-red trench coat over a red shirt, dark trousers, black gloves, and boots, and he sports a red Duel Gazer tattoo similar to those worn by Kite Tenjo, Trey, Quattro, Quinton, and Dextra. He later adopts a grey-and-black coat with orange ruffles, and during his time as a professional duelist in Spartan City, he wears a form-fitting blue-and-red costume resembling a wrestler's outfit, complete with a star-shaped mask.
His dueling style evolves over the course of the series. While working for Mr. Heartland, he uses a Bounzer Deck that focuses on punishing opponents with aggressive, disruptive tactics, exemplified by cards like Photon Strike Bounzer. After resigning, he switches to a Heroic Deck built around warriors and weapons, with his ace card being Heroic Champion - Excalibur, which can double its attack points in a final counterattack. In Zexal II, he continues to use the Heroic Deck with added flexibility in summoning techniques. Nistro also possesses the ability to teleport, which he uses during his work for Heartland.
His role in the story begins as an antagonist working for the tournament's corrupt organizers, but as he steps away from that position and becomes a competitor, he gradually shifts into a more neutral and eventually allied presence, supporting Yuma and others during later conflicts. His development highlights a transition from a loyal henchman to an independent duelist who values the honor of the game and the bonds he shares with those he respects.
