Description
Quattro, whose real name is Thomas Arclight, is a major antagonist and later a supporting character in the second half of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL series. He is the second eldest of the three Arclight brothers, alongside his older brother III (Michael) and his younger brother V (Christopher). The Arclight family is deeply tied to the ancient history of the Astral World and the Barian World, and Quattro’s identity is shaped by the tragic legacy left by their father, Dr. Faker.

In terms of background, Quattro was originally a kind and gentle child who deeply admired his father. However, after Dr. Faker was corrupted by his contact with the Barian Emperor Vector and began his plan to destroy the Astral World, the Arclight brothers were subjected to harsh training and manipulation. Quattro, in particular, was molded into a ruthless duelist, forced to suppress his emotions and adopt a cold, sadistic persona to serve his father’s ambitions. He was given the task of hunting down and defeating "Numbers" holders, and he took pride in his role as an enforcer, believing that his father’s cause was just.

Personality-wise, Quattro is initially portrayed as arrogant, cruel, and condescending. He enjoys toying with his opponents, both psychologically and in dueling, often using brutal tactics to break their spirits before delivering a final blow. He has a flair for the theatrical, frequently laughing maniacally and making grandiose speeches about pain and despair. His dueling style reflects this, as he relies on aggressive, high-damage strategies that overwhelm the opponent. However, this cruelty is a façade born from trauma and indoctrination. Deep down, Quattro retains a strong sense of brotherly love and loyalty, though he suppresses these feelings to avoid appearing weak. Over time, his true personality re-emerges: he is protective, proud, and capable of great empathy, especially toward his siblings.

Quattro’s primary motivation throughout most of the series is to serve his father and protect his brothers, even if it means becoming a villain. He believes that by helping Dr. Faker destroy the Astral World, he can save his family from further suffering. He also harbors a deep-seated rivalry with the protagonist, Yuma Tsukumo, viewing him as naive and unworthy of the power of the "Numbers." Later, after learning the truth about his father’s manipulation and the greater threat posed by the Barian World, Quattro’s motivation shifts to atonement. He seeks to correct the wrongs he committed and to defend his brothers from the Barians, fighting alongside his former enemies.

In the story, Quattro plays a pivotal role as one of the primary antagonists during the early part of the ZEXAL II arc. He is responsible for several key defeats and near-defeats of Yuma and his friends, and he is the one who initially awakens the dark power of the "Number" cards in Yuma’s rival, Kaito Tenjo. His most notable duel is against Yuma, where he uses his ace monster, Number 32: Shark Drake, to devastating effect. However, he is eventually defeated, and this loss becomes the catalyst for his redemption. In the later stages, Quattro becomes a key ally in the war against the Barians, particularly during the invasion of Earth. He duels alongside his brothers and former enemies, showing his growth from a vengeful pawn to a heroic defender.

Key relationships define much of Quattro’s arc. His bond with his brothers is the most significant; he is fiercely protective of V, who is the youngest, and he shares a complex, competitive dynamic with III. Their father, Dr. Faker, is both a source of pain and a figure Quattro desperately wants to impress, making his eventual rejection of his father’s path a major turning point. Quattro also develops a grudging respect for Yuma, whom he initially dismisses but later comes to see as a true friend and worthy duelist. His rivalry with Kaito is also notable, as both are powerful duelists with troubled pasts, though they eventually fight on the same side. Lastly, his connection to the "Number" cards, particularly Shark Drake, is almost symbiotic, as the card reflects his aggressive and predatory nature.

The character’s development is one of the most pronounced in the series. Quattro transitions from a sadistic villain to a remorseful anti-hero, and finally to a steadfast ally. This change is gradual and earned, triggered by his defeat, the revelation of his father’s lies, and the unwavering kindness of Yuma. He learns to accept his emotions rather than suppress them, and he reclaims his original name, Thomas, as a symbol of his regained humanity. By the end of the series, he is no longer driven by fear or anger but by a genuine desire to protect those he loves.

In terms of notable abilities, Quattro is an exceptionally skilled duelist, specializing in Water-attribute monsters, specifically the "Shark" archetype. His ace monster, Number 32: Shark Drake, is a powerful Xyz monster that can absorb the attack points of defeated monsters and attack multiple times, embodying his predatory style. He later gains access to Number C32: Shark Drake Veiss, a Chaos Number form that amplifies this destructive power. Beyond dueling, Quattro possesses a high degree of strategic intelligence, often setting elaborate traps and predicting his opponent’s moves several turns in advance. His physical resilience and pain tolerance are also notable, as he endures severe damage from duels without flinching, a trait born from his harsh upbringing. Ultimately, Quattro is a tragic figure who finds redemption through struggle, and his journey from villain to hero underscores the series’ themes of forgiveness, brotherhood, and the choice to change one’s fate.
