Description
Droite, known as Dextra in some English adaptations, is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL. She is a young woman of nineteen years who serves as one of Mr. Heartland's most trusted subordinates, operating as his right-hand woman in a position that mirrors her partner, Gauche. Her name is French for right, which reflects her role as Mr. Heartland's right hand while Gauche, whose name means left, serves as his left hand. Droite is a tall and composed individual with shoulder-length dark purple hair accented by lighter purple highlights, with several bangs falling down past her brown eyes. Her attire consists of a pink blouse with a purple undershirt worn beneath a white business suit, paired with purple tights and black spike-heeled shoes. She wears an anklet on her right ankle that matches a band on Gauche's left wrist. Her D-Pad is shaped like a butterfly, and like Kite Tenjo and Gauche, she possesses a special blue Duel Gazer tattoo, marking her as an elite Duelist and a Number Hunter.
Droite's personality stands in stark contrast to that of her high-spirited and impulsive partner, Gauche. She is portrayed as cold-blooded, serious, and strictly professional, often scolding Gauche for his casual behavior and lack of restraint. Her approach to her duties is precise and calculating, a trait that is directly reflected in her dueling strategy. She is a strategist who prefers to act only after gathering information and waiting for an opponent to be weakened before making a move. Despite her cold exterior, she is not without emotion. She shows genuine concern for Gauche when he is in danger, and her character is defined by a deep, personal affection for Kite Tenjo. This affection originated in a childhood incident when Kite protected her from a rampaging duel robot, injuring himself in the process. She later fell in love with him after witnessing his gentle smile as he comforted his younger brother, Hart. This love becomes a powerful, if initially hidden, motivation for her actions.
Droite and Gauche were taken in by Mr. Heartland during their childhood, and he trained them to be elite dueling soldiers. Their official role during the World Duel Carnival is as members of the operation committee and WDC referees, responsible for monitoring the tournament and maintaining order. However, their true, secret mission is to hunt for the powerful Number cards on Mr. Heartland's behalf. In the early stages of the tournament, they investigate incidents like Housaku Yasai's Vegetable Death Matches, showing a ruthless efficiency in their work. During a confrontation with Yuma Tsukumo over the cheating of a contestant named Flip, Droite and Gauche engage him in a Tag Duel. Throughout the duel, their coordinated strategies and powerful cards easily overpower Yuma. Droite summons her ace monster, Photon Papilloperative, which reveals her connection to Kite, as the monster is a Photon-type. The duel ultimately ends in a loss for the pair when Gauche takes a direct attack meant for Droite, but it solidifies their interest in Yuma, who possesses a Number. After witnessing the intensity of the competition, Droite and Gauche decide to resign from their referee positions and join the World Duel Carnival as participants, with Droite publicly stating her purpose is to watch over and protect Kite.
Droite's key relationships are central to her development. Her partnership with Gauche is a constant in her life; they are a battle-tested duo who trust each other implicitly, even as she constantly criticizes his brashness. Her most significant relationship, however, is with Kite Tenjo. Upon learning from his robot companion, Orbital 7, that the Photon Transformation power Kite uses to duel is slowly killing him, she becomes deeply concerned. She approaches him privately before the finals, urging him to withdraw from the tournament for the sake of his health, a plea he ultimately rejects. During the Duel Coaster finals, she actively shadows Kite. When Kite moves to duel the villainous Tron, Droite intercepts him, declaring that she must be the one to defeat Tron to fulfill her vow to serve Mr. Heartland, though her personal desire to protect Kite is clear. She threatens Kite into moving to a different lane and enters the Jungle Field to duel Tron herself. In this duel, Droite showcases her notable abilities as a meticulous planner. She uses a combination of Spell Point cards to massively increase her Life Points and sets an intricate trap field using her Phantom Butterfly Assassin deck, featuring cards like Butterfly Charm, Assassin Gate, and Death Butterfly Invitation. Her strategy is masterful and nearly flawless, designed to restrict Tron's every move. However, Tron proves to be a superior duelist, using his Number 8: Heraldic King Genome Heriter to dismantle her defense and defeat her. The consequence of her loss is severe: Tron not only eliminates her from the tournament but also completely erases all her memories of Kite. The last thing she does before losing consciousness is to ask Yuma, who catches her, to ensure that Kite does not forget her. After Tron is ultimately defeated by Yuma, it remains ambiguous whether Droite ever fully recovers her memories, leaving her fate as a poignant outcome of her devotion.
