TV-Series
Description
Cathy, known in the Japanese version as Cathy Katherine and often nicknamed Cat-chan, is a 13-year-old student who becomes one of Yuma Tsukumo's close friends and a member of the Numbers Club. Her design features silver hair styled with clips that resemble cat ears and blue-green eyes, and she typically wears the same school uniform as her classmate Tori Meadows. Her appearance is completed with a pair of large, square-framed glasses, though she removes them to use a pink Duel Gazer with a purple lens shaped like a cat's eye. In the second series, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II, Cathy adopts a new casual outfit consisting of a magenta and black top with a bell at the collar, paired with short black pants that include a cat tail accessory.
Cathy's most defining trait is her profound obsession with cats, which permeates every aspect of her life. She decorates her home extensively with cat-themed items, dresses in Gothic Lolita-style cat costumes, and often mimics feline behavior. Her speech is frequently punctuated with the word cat or the onomatopoeia nya, mimicking a meow, and she curls her hands to resemble cat paws. She possesses the unique ability to communicate with and control cats, using them for various purposes such as gathering information or carrying out elaborate schemes. In sharp contrast to her cat affinity, she harbors a strong distaste for dogs, once calling them thieving dogs.
Initially, Cathy is portrayed as a loner and a stereotypically shy girl, possessing such a faint presence in the classroom that her classmates hardly notice her. Her shyness is especially pronounced around Yuma Tsukumo, for whom she has a significant crush. This infatuation drives her early, more aggressive actions, such as stalking Yuma, sneaking into his bedroom to swap his clothes, and even using her cats to trap Tori, whom she views as a romantic rival. Her goal during her first Duel with Yuma was to gain the confidence to introduce herself and confess her feelings, but Yuma remained completely oblivious to her true intentions. Over time, her role in the story evolves from a secret admirer and occasional antagonist to a loyal friend and active member of the Numbers Club, where she supports Yuma in his various conflicts.
Her key relationships deepen as the series progresses. Her initial rivalry with Tori Meadows is marked by jealousy and conflict, as she sees Tori as someone cunningly winning Yuma's heart. Their relationship, however, gradually improves. During a sports duel tournament, after a heated argument over who would be the female representative of the Numbers Club, the two are forced to work together. This experience leads them to apologize and smile at one another, and their bond continues to strengthen through shared challenges. By the time of Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II, their relationship has become much more amicable. This is notably demonstrated when Cathy, with tears in her eyes, encourages Tori to accompany Yuma to the Astral World, tearfully confessing that she would not be as helpful and that Tori is better suited to support him, showing a mature and selfless affection for Yuma.
Throughout the story, Cathy undergoes significant character development. She transitions from a shy, scheming loner to a more confident and proactive individual. Her decision to join the Super Secret Number Cards Investigation Club was motivated by a desire to understand Numbers better in the hope that Yuma would notice her more. As a member of Yuma's friend group, she becomes more outspoken and brave, assisting in missions such as infiltrating Kite Tenjo's headquarters and rescuing her friends from danger. Her growing confidence is also reflected in her dueling, where she faces opponents like Dog-chan, a duelist hiding behind her pet dog. Despite initially gaining an advantage, Cathy ultimately loses the match on purpose to help Dog-chan build her own self-confidence, mirroring her own journey. In the final arc of ZEXAL II, when Yuma and Tori prepare to go to the Barian World, Cathy makes the difficult but mature decision to remain behind, demonstrating her growth from a girl driven by her crush to a supportive friend who trusts others to do what is necessary.
Cathy is also notable for her physical agility, possessing cat-like skills such as sharp claws and remarkable jumping ability. She uses these skills to escape traps, attack statues, and scale buildings with ease. In duels, she employs a Cat Deck, focused on swarming the field with her Stray Cat monsters and using lockdown tactics. Her signature cards include the XYZ monsters Cat Girl Magician and Twin-Tail Cat Lady. Despite her frequent duels, none of her anime cards have been released in the official card game.
