Description
Muten, also known as Master Roshi, is an elderly martial arts master who appears in the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. He is the legendary creator of the Kamehameha technique and the founder of the Turtle School of martial arts. In the film, he is shown living on his isolated island home, Kame House, and attending the birthday party of his longtime friend Bulma at the Capsule Corporation compound. He is over three hundred years old and has trained many of the series’ main fighters, including Son Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha, though by the time of the story his own combat power has been far surpassed by the younger generation.
In terms of personality, Muten is a contradictory figure. He is often depicted as wise and perceptive, capable of reading situations and people with a clarity that surprises those around him. At the same time, he is famously lecherous and prone to making inappropriate advances toward attractive women, a trait that provides much of the film’s comic relief. He balances these extremes with a generally easygoing and humorous demeanor, though he can become serious when the stakes are high. His motivations in Battle of Gods are simple: he wishes to enjoy the celebration and spend time with his friends. However, when the God of Destruction, Beerus, arrives and threatens to destroy the Earth over a trivial annoyance, Muten acts as a voice of caution. He urges the other fighters to avoid provoking Beerus and attempts to calm the situation, demonstrating that his experience has taught him when to stand down rather than fight.
Muten’s role in the story is primarily supportive and comedic. He does not engage in combat during the film—his days of frontline fighting are long behind him—but his presence at the party helps ground the extraordinary events in the familiar setting of the Dragon Ball cast. His key relationships in the film are with his former students, particularly Goku and Krillin, as well as with Bulma and Vegeta. He holds a deep respect for Goku’s growth as a warrior, though he also recognizes his own limitations in the face of godlike power. The film does not show any significant character development for Muten; instead, he remains a consistent representation of the wise old master who has long since passed the torch to the next generation.
While Muten does not display any noteworthy new abilities in Battle of Gods, his signature techniques are part of his established background. He is the original practitioner of the Kamehameha wave, a powerful energy attack that he can amplify by entering a max-power state that increases his muscle mass and height. He also possesses heightened ki sensing, which allows him to perceive the strength of others, and he has a vast knowledge of martial arts theory and history. In the film, his most notable demonstration of insight is his measured response to Beerus’s anger, showing that his greatest ability may be his wisdom rather than his physical strength.
