Description
Beerus, known as the God of Destruction of Universe 7, is a fictional character created by Akira Toriyama who first appeared in the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. His name was derived from the word virus, though creator Akira Toriyama initially believed it came from beer, which led to the alcohol-themed naming convention for his attendant Whis and subsequent divine characters. Beerus's physical design is based on a Cornish Rex cat that lived with Toriyama during the character's development, combined with clothing and ornaments inspired by ancient Egyptian attire. Toei Animation had originally envisioned the character as resembling a lizard, but Toriyama changed the design entirely into a cat-like being.
As a deity, Beerus's occupation is to maintain balance in the universe through destruction, acting in direct contrast to the Supreme Kais who are responsible for creation and preservation. His personality is marked by a combination of immense power and childlike petulance. Beerus is a gourmet who takes great pleasure in enjoying fine food, particularly Earth's cuisine, and his mood can swing dramatically based on trivial matters, such as becoming furiously enraged when Majin Buu refuses to share the last serving of pudding. Despite his status as a god of destruction, he is not inherently evil; rather, destruction is his nature, and he often acts out of boredom or a desire for entertainment rather than malice. He exhibits distinctly catlike mannerisms in his movements and behavior, often appearing lazy, sleeping for decades at a time, and expecting to be appeased by those who wish to avoid his wrath.
Beerus's primary motivations are his two sole desires: enjoying delicious food and fighting worthy opponents. The central plot of Battle of Gods is set in motion when Beerus awakens from a 39-year sleep after having a prophetic dream about a Super Saiyan God, leading him to search the universe for this legendary warrior. His role in the story is that of an antagonist, though he differs from previous Dragon Ball villains in that Goku and his friends are not trying to defeat him out of heroism but rather to prevent him from destroying Earth on a whim. Beerus ultimately spares Earth after his battle with Goku, revealing that Goku was the second strongest opponent he had ever faced, the first being his own attendant and martial arts teacher, Whis.
Beerus has several key relationships that define his place in the divine hierarchy. He is attended by Whis, who serves as both his caretaker and martial arts instructor, and whom Beerus respects as being more powerful than himself. Beerus has a twin brother named Champa, who serves as the God of Destruction for Universe 6, and the two share a competitive rivalry. His life is mysteriously linked to the East Supreme Kai of Universe 7; if the Supreme Kai dies, Beerus will die as well, representing a significant weakness given the Supreme Kai's vastly inferior combat abilities. Beerus is also responsible for several unexplained events in Dragon Ball history, including sealing the Old Supreme Kai within the Z-Sword and destroying the North Kai's planet, both acts resulting from petty squabbles. He also instigated Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta after feeling disrespected by King Vegeta. His relationship with Goku and Vegeta evolves from mere curiosity into something resembling a mentorship, as he observes their growth and occasionally imparts wisdom about divine techniques.
Over the course of his appearances, Beerus undergoes subtle character development. While he begins as a capricious destroyer who threatens Earth on a whim, he gradually becomes more invested in the Saiyans from Universe 7, attending tournaments, assisting in battles against cosmic threats, and even using his wish on the Super Dragon Balls to restore Earth in Universe 6. He maintains his dangerous unpredictability, however, capable of erasing beings from existence when sufficiently provoked, as demonstrated when he used his Hakai technique to obliterate the rogue Supreme Kai Zamasu.
Beerus possesses abilities that place him among the most powerful beings in the Dragon Ball universe. His strength is sufficient to destroy entire universes, and during his first battle with Super Saiyan God Goku, the shockwaves from their colliding fists traveled across the entire macrocosmos of Universe 7 and threatened to destroy it if the battle continued. It was later revealed that Beerus had been holding back a considerable amount of his power during this fight and possesses the ability to neutralize any mortal's energy. His signature technique is Hakai, or Destruction, a powerful ability that can completely obliterate objects, entities, and even souls from existence, which he can use on mortals and lower-tier gods. He can also perform the Sphere of Destruction, a technique where he creates a sun-like ball of energy between his hands that grows before he launches it. Beerus has demonstrated the ability to use an imperfect version of Ultra Instinct, a divine technique that allows the body to respond to attacks without conscious thought, as shown when he dodged simultaneous attacks from multiple other Gods of Destruction. Despite his overwhelming power, his life remains linked to the East Supreme Kai, meaning that a sufficiently powerful enemy could theoretically kill Beerus by targeting the much weaker Supreme Kai instead.
