Description
Apsu, also known as Abzu, is the primordial God of Darkness and the main antagonist of the first season of the anime Saint Seiya Omega. This deity is an ancient being who has existed since before the creation of the universe, slumbering for eons at its center after bringing all of existence into being. Apsu is described as the sacred darkness that creates and destroys everything, making him one of the most powerful entities in the series, whose power is suggested to surpass even the twelve Olympian gods.
In terms of personality, Apsu's demeanor shifts depending on his form. When possessing the body of the Pegasus Saint Koga, he is an aggressive and nearly silent god, singularly focused on following his own desires to reclaim the universe he created. In his true, spiritual form, he possesses a calmer disposition. Despite being an ancient and seemingly merciless deity, he shows a particular, almost paternal or possessive, consideration for Koga, whom he refers to as a son of his darkness, as Koga was bathed in Apsu's dark energy as an infant. However, this consideration has a limit; if Koga refuses to embrace the darkness, Apsu is willing to destroy him.
The primary motivation of Apsu is to reclaim the universe that was taken from him by other gods, including Athena, while he slept. He views the Earth and the cosmos as his creation and seeks to eradicate those who have usurped it, returning everything to a state of primordial darkness. His role in the story is that of the hidden true master behind the schemes of the sorceress Medea and the Gold Saint Pisces Amor, who orchestrated events to awaken him using the dark cosmos within the young saint Koga. Upon his awakening on the planet Mars, he immediately demonstrates his overwhelming power by effortlessly killing Amor with a single punch. He then proceeds to incapacitate Koga's fellow Bronze Saints and kidnaps Athena, taking her into his dark dimension for a final confrontation.
Apsu's key relationships are primarily defined by his creation and his hosts. He is the progenitor of all existence, including the gods who later defied him. His connection to the protagonist Koga is central to the plot; Koga serves as the vessel for his resurrection, and Apsu repeatedly attempts to convince the young saint to willingly accept his dark heritage. He also has a direct antagonistic relationship with Athena, viewing her as the last remaining deity who stole his world and thus the primary obstacle to his goal. Medea is his devoted servant who prays for his return, though Apsu shows her no loyalty, ultimately killing her himself.
The character undergoes little development as he is a static, primordial force of nature. His arc is one of awakening and defeat. After being freed from Koga's body by the combined efforts of Seiya and Yuna, he reveals his true form to fight Koga directly. In his true body, Apsu is an eerie, androgynous entity with long white hair, red eyes, a long tail, and dark, smooth skin, wearing ornate armor with bull-headed shoulder guards. Despite his godly power, he is ultimately destroyed by Koga, who uses the power of light from Aria's staff and the combined cosmos of his friends to overcome the god of darkness.
Notable abilities of Apsu are vast and terrifying. As the creator of the universe, he wields absolute control over darkness, which he can manipulate into powerful energy projectiles, shields, and even wings for flight. His dark cosmos is so potent that it can inflict permanent dark wounds on any being, including gods, which suppress the victim's ability to use their own cosmos. He can take possession of a mortal body that has been blessed by his darkness, and once inside a host, he can use their techniques, as seen when he employs corrupted versions of the Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken and Pegasus Sui Sei Ken. Apsu is also capable of creating and destroying matter, regenerating his physical form instantly, and damaging the divine cloth of Athena, a feat that few other beings can accomplish. His existence as a purely spiritual entity of darkness means he has no fixed physical form and can appear as a shadowy manifestation or a solid being at will.
