TV-Series
Description
Ban is a character who first appeared as the Bronze Saint of the Lionet constellation in the original Saint Seiya series, and later returned in Saint Seiya Omega in a significantly different role. By the time of the Omega story, he has long since retired from being a frontline Bronze Saint, having passed his sacred cloth and title to a younger generation. Instead, Ban has become a primary instructor at the training facility for the Steel Saints, a group of warriors who use artificial, technologically enhanced armors to fight for Athena.
In his older years, Ban has developed into a large, robust man with a stern appearance, yet his personality balances this intimidating look with a deep sense of responsibility and care. He is a dedicated and experienced preceptor who imposes harsh and severe training regimens on his students, believing that only through rigorous discipline can they become strong, courageous, and intelligent protectors of the goddess. Despite his strict methods, he harbors a great deal of paternal affection for his charges, considering each of them to be like his own children. This is especially evident in his relationship with the young and reckless Steel Saint Subaru, whom he knows very well and often teases affectionately by rubbing his head with his fist. Ban is also confident in his abilities as an educator, even proclaiming himself a Great Teacher.
Ban's motivations in Omega are rooted in his duty to prepare the next generation for the constant threats facing Athena. When the ancient enemy Pallas and her warriors, the Pallasites, launch a new war, Ban's role evolves from a mere instructor to an active commander. He is forced to abandon the training center after an attack and leads his Steel Saints to regroup at the stronghold of Palaestra. His primary goal becomes the protection of his students and the organization of defensive tactics against the invading forces. He fights alongside his lifelong friend Nachi, the former Wolf Saint, and the two are often seen working together as a pair, coordinating the Steel Saints in battle. His bond with his students, particularly Subaru, drives him to fight not only for Athena but to ensure their survival and growth.
Throughout the conflict, Ban demonstrates significant development from his early days as a minor, easily defeated participant in the Galaxian Wars. He has matured into a charismatic and eloquent leader, possessing a commanding presence that inspires those around him. He and Nachi show considerable resilience, managing to withstand the powerful cosmic attacks of high-ranking Pallasites like Hati and Aegir. When the battle reaches Pallas Belda, Ban receives a specially designed Steel Cloth from its creator, Doctor Asamori. This new armor is modeled directly on his old Lionet Bronze Cloth, allowing him to fight on the front lines once more to protect the wounded and help repair other saints' armors. In this new capacity, he demonstrates his signature technique, the Lionet Bomber, a powerful shoulder charge where he propels himself at his enemy with his body engulfed in flames. His determination is such that he, along with his fellow Steel Saints, is later able to awaken the indication of Omega, a powerful and divine cosmos, to free themselves from an enemy's immobilizing ability. Ultimately, Ban serves as a clear example of how a minor saint can find a new and vital purpose, contributing to Athena's cause not as a legendary hero, but as a steadfast mentor and guardian for the future.
