Description
Celeris is the Bronze Saint of the constellation Equuleus, also known as the Little Horse, and he appears in the Pallas arc of the anime. He is a native of the city of Pallasbelta, which was invaded and occupied by the forces of the goddess Pallas. His character is defined by a deep, selfless commitment to protecting the innocent, a resolve that stems from a tragedy he witnessed firsthand. Before becoming a Saint, Celeris was an ordinary human. During the Pallasite invasion, he and a young girl named Selene were saved by the previous Equuleus Saint, Kitalpha, who sacrificed his life using a powerful technique to annihilate their attackers. In his dying moments, Kitalpha told Celeris to witness his cosmos, and the Equuleus Cloth then chose Celeris as its new bearer.
In terms of personality, Celeris is gentle, optimistic, and displays a surprising familiarity with Kouga, whom he immediately calls his older brother. This is not a sign of subservience but a gesture of respect for the fraternal bond between their constellations, as Equuleus is mythologically considered the younger brother of Pegasus, even though Celeris is physically older than Kouga. His body is covered in scars from countless battles, a testament to his dedication and the cost of his protective mission. Unlike other Saints who might seek glory or follow orders without question, Celeris is motivated purely by the safety of the refugees hiding in the underground shelters of Pallasbelta. He deliberately ignores Athena’s direct order to join the front lines of the assault on Pallas’s castle, believing his duty is to shield the powerless people in his care. He is aware of the reputation of his Cloth, which is regarded as cursed because its wearers are destined to die in battle. However, he does not fear this superstition; instead, he views it as a source of strength, reasoning that a star shines brightest just before it dies, and the Cloth grants its immense power precisely in moments of desperation.
His role in the story is that of a guardian and a mentor. He meets the main group of Bronze Saints, led by Kouga, when they rescue Selene from a Pallasite attack. Convinced of their cause, he guides them through secret passages towards Pallas’s castle but refuses to accompany them further, choosing to stay behind to protect the shelter. His key relationships are defined by his protective nature and his sacrificial legacy. He shares a very close bond with Selene, whom he saved and continues to protect as a surrogate guardian. He also forms a significant connection with the Steel Saint Subaru, who initially scorns Celeris for what he perceives as weakness but comes to respect his courage. The antagonistic Pallasite soldier, Hati, seeking revenge for a previous humiliation, becomes Celeris’s final opponent by threatening to attack the shelter if Celeris does not face him.
Celeris undergoes a brief but complete character arc centered on fulfilling the destiny of the Equuleus Saint. When Hati returns, Celeris, already gravely wounded, accepts the challenge. Despite Subaru’s attempts to help, the battle is brutal. In a final act, Celeris does exactly as his predecessor Kitalpha did: he asks Subaru to watch his cosmos and engrave it in his memory. He then unleashes his ultimate technique, the Supernova Explosion Maximum. This attack creates a massive fireball that consumes and kills Hati, but the strain and the technique itself also claim Celeris’s life. Lying on the battlefield, he bequeaths his Clothstone to Subaru, making him the next Saint of Equuleus and expressing his faith that Subaru can break the armor’s so-called curse.
His notable abilities are derived from the power of his Cosmo. Despite lacking formal training as a Knight, the power of the Equuleus Cloth allows Celeris to amplify his Cosmo significantly, enabling him to perform feats such as reflecting Hati’s dagger attacks. His sole named and demonstrated technique is the Supernova Explosion Maximum, also called the Maximum Supernova Explosion. To perform it, he opens his arms and gathers all his Cosmo into his hands, creating a small sun-like sphere of energy. He then charges forward to press this fireball against his opponent, triggering a colossal explosion of supernova-like power. The technique is a suicidal one, as the backlash of the explosion invariably kills the user, a fate shared by all Equuleus Saints who employ this ultimate attack in battle.
