Description
Izana Shinatose is a resident of the generation ship Sidonia and a pilot of the giant humanoid weapons known as Gardes. Izana belongs to a genetically engineered third gender, a biological classification separate from male or female that emerged among humans over centuries of space travel. This biology allows for transformation into a male or female body based on romantic attraction to a partner, and it also permits asexual reproduction through parthenogenesis.
In terms of background, Izana is a clone of Yure Shinatose, a scientist who is a member of Sidonia's ruling immortal council and Izana's grandmother. Izana lives with this grandmother and maintains regular communication with her. Initially serving as a Garde pilot trainee with the designation TS-291, Izana is later promoted to Unit 723.
Izana is the first person on Sidonia's surface to befriend the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze, treating him with kindness when he struggles to adapt to his new life. The personality is reserved and empathetic, but also capable of displaying jealousy, particularly toward other women who show interest in Nagate, such as Shizuka Hoshijiro and the hybrid being Tsumugi Shiraui. Despite this romantic rivalry, Izana maintains a strong friendship with fellow pilot Yuhata Midorikawa, at one point protecting her in combat at significant personal risk.
