Movie
Description
Izumo Midorikawa is a senior pilot and a member of the elite Akai squad aboard the Sidonia. He holds a high call number of 004, indicating his significant rank and experience among the ship's Guardian pilots. His appearance is characterized by dark green hair and eyes, a trait he shares with his younger sister, Yuhata Midorikawa. Like most pilots, he is typically seen in his pilot's skin suit, though he wears a uniform for formal occasions.

In terms of personality, Izumo is presented as a fairly likable and capable individual who gets along well with his teammates and others, such as the protagonist Nagate Tanikaze. However, his most defining personal trait is his overprotective and controlling relationship with his sister, Yuhata. He perceives her behavior as sometimes foolish and is strongly motivated to supervise her actions, which creates a dynamic where he often intervenes in her affairs. This protective instinct is a central aspect of his character and his primary motivation outside of his combat duties.

Izumo's role in the story is unfortunately brief, as he is part of the squad that sorties to subdue the Gauna designated as 487. This mission ultimately proves fatal for his entire unit. The battle becomes chaotic after the squad leader, Akai, is killed in action. In the ensuing struggle, Izumo attempts to rescue a fellow pilot, Momose. As he moves to save her, he takes an attack that was meant for her inert Garde, and a Gauna tentacle pierces his cockpit, killing him. His last words are an instruction for Momose to run. His death is a significant event that heavily impacts his sister, Yuhata, who later becomes interested in Tanikaze after he defeats the same Gauna that killed her brother.

His key relationships are primarily with his Akai squadmates and his sister. He is a dedicated and loyal comrade, willing to risk his life to save his fellow pilots. His bond with Yuhata is the strongest personal connection in his life, driving much of his off-duty behavior. Beyond his piloting skills, which are advanced enough to earn him the number four rank, the narrative does not detail any unique or notable abilities separate from standard Guardian pilot training and tactics. His development is cut short by his early death, and he does not undergo any significant change within the story's timeline.
