Description
Nagate Tanikaze is the main protagonist and central figure of the story. He is a clone of the legendary ace pilot Hiroki Saitou, although he was raised in secret as Saitou's grandson in the deepest, most isolated levels of the starship Sidonia. From childhood, he trained relentlessly on an old Garde simulator, never interacting with anyone but his grandfather. After Hiroki Saitou's death, Nagate is forced to emerge from the underground and is quickly conscripted into Sidonia's Defense Force, where he takes command of the legendary Garde unit Tsugumori.
His background leaves him profoundly shy, naive, and lacking in common knowledge of Sidonia's culture and social norms. He is often quiet and awkward around others, especially because he is a pure human who has not undergone the genetic modification for photosynthesis that most Sidonians have, meaning he must eat multiple meals each day rather than relying on light.
