Description
Peter Mauk, a name also romanized as Peter Mork or Peter Moke, is a supporting character in the anime Overlord. He is a young silver-ranked adventurer who serves as the leader of the adventurer party called the Swords of Darkness, which is based in the city of E-Rantel in the Re-Estize Kingdom. He has blonde hair and blue eyes, both traits that are common among the people of the kingdom, and an otherwise unremarkable face with smooth features. His background is that of an ordinary working adventurer of modest means; he wears banded armor chosen primarily for financial reasons, and he carries a broadsword and a large shield, filling the role of the group's frontline warrior and defensive shield.

The name of his party comes from a shared dream. The Swords of Darkness are the legendary magic blades once wielded by the Black Knight, one of the Thirteen Heroes of ages past, and Peter and his comrades hope to one day collect these weapons for themselves. This shared ambition is the bond that holds the group together. In practical terms, Peter and his party make their living by hunting monsters that spill out of the surrounding forests, taking on jobs for reward money. Their preferred targets are relatively weak creatures such as goblins and the wolves that accompany them, and while they can handle slightly more dangerous foes, they know their limits and regard threats such as giant spiders and forest worms as being too much for them.

In personality, Peter is a cheerful, good-natured, and serious young man who carries much of the responsibility for keeping his team focused. He is a capable leader with sound judgment, and he often finds himself trying to steer conversations back on track when his more easygoing comrades let them drift. His relationship with his teammates is warm and close, and the four of them have survived many near-death situations together, which has made them deeply loyal to one another. He is honest about his own limitations and those of his party, but he is also brave and willing to stand his ground when the situation demands it. When the party first encounters the adventurer Momon, Peter initially feels some jealousy toward the newcomer, but as Momon demonstrates overwhelming strength, that envy gives way to genuine admiration and respect.

Within the story, Peter plays a relatively brief but meaningful role. He and his party ask Momon and his companion Nabe to join them on a monster-hunting job, but when the herbalist Nfirea places a direct request with Momon instead, the group travels together to gather medicinal herbs. Along the way, they encounter a band of goblins and repel them through solid teamwork, with Momon contributing greatly to the fight. After completing the task and returning to E-Rantel, the party crosses paths with Clementine and Khazit, who have come to abduct Nfirea. Peter and his comrades resist, but they are completely outmatched. Peter is killed by Clementine, and the rest of the Swords of Darkness die alongside him, leaving Momon to arrive too late and later discover Ninya's diary, which reveals important information about the world and about Ninya's own secret purpose.

Key relationships define much of his character. The members of his party are Lukrut Volve, a cheerful ranger; Ninya, a talented spellcaster who acts as the group's brain and whose personal circumstances Peter knows about; and Dyne Woodwonder, a druid with a good knowledge of medicine. As their leader, Peter works to coordinate them in combat and keep morale high. His dynamic with Momon moves from wariness and jealousy to admiration, and his death at the hands of Clementine serves as a stark demonstration of the dangers that ordinary people face in this world.

In terms of development, Peter's story is short and tragic. He represents the competent but ordinary adventurer, someone who is capable and courageous by human standards but utterly outclassed by the truly powerful figures that move through the world. His death, along with the destruction of his entire party, emphasizes how precarious life is for even the more experienced adventurers and leaves a strong impression on the protagonist.

Regarding abilities, Peter is a fighter and the primary tank of his party, using his shield to protect his more vulnerable allies. He is capable of using at least one martial art known as Fortress, a defensive technique, though his full repertoire is not shown. His exact level of power is unclear, but with the support of his comrades he can fight on even terms with a group of six wild goblins, which gives a sense of his place in the world's overall power structure. Within the adventurer ranking system, silver rank places him in the middle tier, well above beginners but far below the elite adventurers who sit at the top of the profession and the far more dangerous beings that exist beyond human society.
