Description
Ains Ooal Gown, originally known as Momonga, is the central figure of the narrative. His journey begins not in a fantasy realm, but in a dystopian future where he lived as an ordinary salaryman named Suzuki Satoru, a person with few personal connections who found solace in the online game Yggdrasil. In this game, he was the guild master of the powerful guild "Ains Ooal Gown," which he named after his companions. When the game's servers were permanently shut down, he chose to remain logged in, only to find himself transported to a new world, his consciousness fully inhabiting his powerful skeletal avatar. He then adopted the guild's name as his own, both to honor his absent friends and in the hope that the legendary name might draw any other transported players out of hiding.

As an Overlord, the highest racial class of undead, Ains possesses a terrifying and commanding appearance: a skeleton with glowing red eyes, a floating red orb within his ribcage, and a dark halo behind his skull. Despite his fearsome look and a game-originating "Extreme Evil" alignment value, his personality is more complex and grounded than his appearance suggests. While his undead nature actively suppresses powerful emotions like fear or deep sadness, he still retains vestiges of his human personality, such as his cautious, strategic mind and a tendency towards anxious overthinking. He is a prudent and often paranoid leader, always planning for contingencies and famously prone to "fighting with the air," meaning he concocts elaborate strategies to counter threats that are often far less dangerous than he imagines.

His primary motivation is the protection and prosperity of Nazarick, the guild's dungeon headquarters, and the Non-Player Characters (NPCs) within it, whom he now sees as the beloved creations of his former friends. He feels a deep, paternal sense of responsibility toward them, seeing the NPCs as his guildmates' children. This devotion is the engine for most of his actions, from conquering nations to performing seemingly heroic deeds. He is generally not malicious for its own sake and prefers to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, but he will commit genocide without hesitation if it serves the long-term interests of Nazarick or avenges a slight against his charges.

His role in the story is defined by his dual identities. As Ains Ooal Gown, he is the absolute ruler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, a god-like figure worshipped by its denizens. In this capacity, he seeks to establish a utopian nation for all races, the Sorcerer Kingdom, while also searching for any trace of his old companions. To interact with the outside world and gather information without causing panic, he created a secondary persona: Momon the "Dark Hero". Disguised in a suit of black full-plate armor and wielding two massive swords, he operates as a high-ranking adventurer, building a legendary reputation to eventually make the name "Ains Ooal Gown" known throughout the land as a symbol of justice.

His relationships are defined by his roles as a leader, a father figure, and a comrade. He holds a deep reverence for his former guildmates, particularly Touch Me, who once saved him from being killed by other players and whom he sees as a mentor. Among the NPCs of Nazarick, he shows a paternal affection for Pandora's Actor, the avatar he personally created. He trusts the strategic genius of Demiurge and relies on the administrative skills of Albedo, the Guardian Overseer whose settings he altered to make her love him—a decision he has come to deeply regret. He also carries a heavy sense of responsibility for Shalltear Bloodfallen, a powerful guardian he was forced to kill in a PvP battle to free her from mind control, an event that made him far more vigilant and hostile towards potential threats.

Ains experiences significant character development, driven by the crushing weight of expectation. Initially an insecure salaryman pretending to be a king, he is forced to grow into his role as his subordinates interpret his every casual remark as a brilliant, multi-layered strategy. This has led him to become more calculated and proactive, consciously adopting the persona of an omniscient, infallible ruler to maintain the loyalty and morale of his followers. His undead nature has also subtly changed him, making his decision-making more cold and logical, further distancing him from his human past.

Notably, Ains is one of the most powerful beings in the new world. As a level one hundred magic caster, his abilities are vast and overwhelmingly superior to almost all native inhabitants. He possesses the Dark Wisdom class ability, which allows him to learn and utilize over seven hundred spells, ranging from basic first-tier magic to devastating tenth-tier and Super-Tier magic. His combat style typically involves overwhelming foes with instant-death magic like "Grasp Heart," summoning high-level monsters, and controlling the flow of battle with time-stop spells. His most iconic Super-Tier spell, "The Goal of All Life Is Death," is a terrifying ability that massively strengthens his instant-death magic, allowing it to bypass even the immunities of the undead and constructs. He is also equipped with an arsenal of Divine-class items, including eleven powerful World-Class items that offer reality-altering effects and protect him from other World-class items. In his Momon guise, he relies on physical combat, using magic to enhance his strength and wearing magically-crafted armor and greatswords, proving he is not just a master of magic, but a capable warrior as well.
