Description
Basara Akagiyama is a central antagonist introduced in the Duel Masters VS R anime series, serving as a major rival to the protagonist Katta Kirifuda. He is initially presented as a high-ranking executive of Duel Masters Land, a theme park with a secretive underground operation where he uses his motorcycle to transport defeated duelists to a hidden facility.

Physically, Basara is recognized by his spiky silver hair and a prominent scar on his left cheek, a mark he has a habit of touching. His appearance and attire are heavily inspired by speed motorists, reflecting his deep-seated obsession with velocity and racing. This obsession is rooted in his tragic past: as a child, he idolized his father, Jigoro Akagiyama, a champion motorcycle racer. His father died from injuries sustained in a crash because an ambulance, delayed by traffic, could not reach the hospital in time. This event drastically warped Basara's worldview, leading him to despise any form of slowness or obstruction.

His personality is defined by a relentless pursuit of power and a desire to eliminate all speed limits from the world. In his early appearances, he is a formidable duelist known for winning matches in only three turns using a fast-attack deck. He is impulsive, disregards orders from his superiors, and possesses a certain sense of honor, disliking cheating. After suffering a defeat, his thirst for greater power leads him to the South Pole to duel Zakira, a powerful forbidden entity. Zakira recognizes his potential and bestows upon him the legendary forbidden creature, Dokindam X. Acquiring this card marks a turning point, as its dark influence begins to corrupt him, making his personality darker and his ambitions more destructive.

Throughout the story, Basara's key relationships shape his trajectory. His most significant bond is with Number 2, a mechanic who shares his dream of becoming a world-class racer. Number 2 remains his most loyal companion, supporting him even as he descends into villainy. Basara also forms temporary alliances with characters like Hakase and Rambo after being betrayed by the president of Duel Masters Land, uniting with them for revenge. His primary role in the narrative is as a powerful enemy to Katta Kirifuda, whom he defeats and is later defeated by in turn, driving much of the conflict in the series.

His motivations become fully clear in the subsequent series, Duel Masters VS RF, where he leads a group called the Rare Killers. His goal is no longer just personal power but the complete annihilation of the existing world. He believes that by reducing everything to zero, he can recreate a world without the flaws and delays that led to his father's death. To achieve this, he and Number 2 steal rare cards to use as energy for Dokindam X. As the forbidden card's power consumes him, he undergoes a severe physical and mental transformation, giving up his humanity to become a creature. His right arm mutates grotesquely, his skin turns grey, and he becomes a husk driven only by his nihilistic goal to reset the world.

In his final battle, transformed by the even more powerful Dormageddon X, he loses nearly all traces of his former self, even attacking Number 2. After being defeated by Katta, he is revived and returned to human form. In the epilogue, set ten years after the final battle, Basara has abandoned his destructive ambitions and finally achieved his childhood dream of becoming a professional motorcycle racer, with Number 2 still by his side as his mechanic.
