Description
Ashigara is a heavy cruiser belonging to the Fleet of Fog, the sentient ghost fleet that serves as the primary antagonistic force in the narrative. Her physical form is a reincarnation of the Imperial Japanese Navy's third Myoukou-class cruiser, a vessel of 201.7 meters in length with a maximum speed of 90 knots. While she is a formidable warship, her most defining characteristic is her Mental Model, the humanoid avatar through which she interacts with the world. This Mental Model appears as a teenage girl with long, straight black hair that reaches her waist, with two distinctive locks framing her face that curl into drill-like shapes. Her eyes are a deep, dark red, and she often wears jaw-like clips on either side of her head. Her standard attire consists of a variation of the school uniform worn by the battleship Hiei, complete with an armband on her left forearm and the Fleet of Fog emblem stitched onto her right sleeve, though she is also known to dress in the garb of a classic shrine maiden.

Ashigara possesses a loud, brash, and intensely warlike personality, acting with little restraint or forethought. She is defined by her impatience and a violent disposition, often charging into situations without a plan. This impulsiveness is famously illustrated when she proposed destroying the submarine I-401 by simply dumping all of her corrosive warhead torpedoes into the ocean until the target was obliterated, a plan her sister ship Myoukou immediately rejected as insane and inefficient. Her rash nature frequently leads to moments of comic relief, most notably when she dove into the ocean to attack I-401 and, in her excitement, forgot to activate her protective wave-force armor barrier, nearly causing her to drown. Despite this aggressive exterior, she also operates with a particular sense of honor, finding it dishonorable to engage an enemy that is not at full strength.

Within the hierarchy of the Fleet of Fog, Ashigara serves as one of the "Secretaries" in the "Student Council of the Fog," a role she shares with her sister ship Haguro. She is a member of the First Oriental Fleet and is initially part of a pursuit squadron led by the battleships Kongou and Hiei, tasked with hunting down the renegade submarine I-401. Her primary motivation throughout the film Cadenza is to fulfill her duty as a Fog vessel by destroying this target. Alongside her sister Nachi, she actively searches for and engages I-401. When they locate the submarine, Ashigara attacks immediately, finding herself at a disadvantage against the underwater opponent and requesting support. After being ordered to fall back and resupply, she remains close to the flagship Kongou. When I-401 launches a final assault, Ashigara intercepts several torpedoes, ultimately sacrificing her own hull to shield Kongou from a salvo of corrosive warheads that broke through the defensive lines.

However, the destruction of her vessel does not mean the end of her character. Her Union Core, the heart of a Fog ship, survives, and her Mental Model remains intact. This event serves as a key point of development, forcing her to continue existing without her primary weapon systems. After her sinking, she demonstrates a newfound resourcefulness, recovering her sister Haguro's Union Core after it had been swallowed by a goblin shark by physically punching the animal. Later, she and Haguro inadvertently find themselves aboard the I-401 when its engine room is breached. There, they are convinced by the submarine's Mental Model, Iona, to assist the human crew in escaping their sinking vessel, a temporary alliance of survival. In this situation, Ashigara is tasked with helping the crew member Kyouhei Kashihara manage the weapons systems. Even in cooperation, her instincts remain combative; she objects to a risky plan to retrieve a sunken ship and its captain, arguing it is unwise to endanger the entire crew for a potential corpse.

Ashigara's key relationships are primarily defined by her place in the Fleet of Fog hierarchy. She shares a deep loyalty to her flagship, Kongou, for whom she willingly sacrifices herself. She maintains a respectful, if occasionally exasperated, relationship with her older sister and commander Myoukou, as well as a close partnership with her sister Nachi. Her bond with her youngest sister, Haguro, is strong enough that she risks herself to recover Haguro's core. She views the I-401 primarily as an enemy target to be sunk, though circumstance forces a pragmatic truce. In terms of abilities, as a Myoukou-class vessel, Ashigara is equipped with a powerful array of weaponry, including numerous photon cannons, missile launchers, and twelve torpedo tubes capable of firing corrosive warheads. She also possesses a super-graviton cannon, although in the Cadenza film, this is replaced with a specialized harpoon-cannon. Her hull is protected by wave-force armor, a defensive field that is largely impenetrable to human weapons, provided she remembers to activate it. After her vessel is sunk, her Mental Model loses access to these ship-scale weapons but retains its independent intelligence and will.
