Description
Kagraba, also known as Ka Grava-Rai Fuu-Durham Stahl, is a character from the anime Chaos Dragon who serves as the enigmatic ruler of the neutral city-state of Haiga. His most defining feature is his physical form, which is not a natural body but an immortal robot or golem-like construct. This state is maintained through an expensive magical technique known as Wu Xing Ti, which allows his essence to be grafted onto metal parts, effectively making him immortal as long as he can afford to sustain the process.
In terms of personality, Kagraba is first and foremost a merchant and an entrepreneur, described as a capitalistic skinflint who is fully focused on profit. He often speaks in a way that serves his own business purposes, telling others what they want to hear while working toward his own ends. Beneath this greedy and seemingly chaotic neutral exterior, however, he is depicted as being genuinely good at heart. He is an eccentric but benevolent ruler who treats all the subjects of Haiga as true equals, a radical stance in a world where certain groups, such as the Bounded Ones, are heavily discriminated against. Many of his closest confidantes come from these marginalized segments of society, and his city is a prosperous place of peace and equality for its citizens.
Kagraba's primary motivation is tied to his city, Haiga. He needs to remain immortal to maintain the city's promise of peace and prosperity for all. While his actions often seem driven by greed, they are ultimately in service of the general welfare of Haiga. For instance, he secretly uses his wealth to fund a rebellion, stirring the political pot to create a more favorable balance of power. His role in the larger story is that of an ally and guide to the protagonist, Ibuki. Kagraba has an old friendship with the Red Dragon, the destructive entity that Ibuki is contracted with, and he promises to lead the party to the dragon and act as their ambassador.
His key relationships are central to the plot. He has a complex and somewhat friendly rivalry with Gakusho, an ambitious general from the nation of Kouran. Their history is one of business dealings, during which Kagraba tricked her into a bad deal on firearms, leading to her holding a grudge against him. Despite this, they remain former business partners capable of negotiation. Kagraba also proves to be a shrewd judge of character, being one of the first to point out when Ibuki develops an inexplicably strong attachment to this former enemy. Throughout the series, Kagraba is portrayed as a surprisingly human and stabilizing presence, even capable of sacrificing his own autonomy and control over his city to help the party, staying true to a promise he made to both Ibuki and the Red Dragon long ago.
Regarding his development, Kagraba is a relatively stable character whose backstory is revealed over time. He is shown to be willing to sacrifice his own power, allowing the armies of both Kouran and D'Natia to peacefully occupy and surveil his city in order to prevent a bloody conflict and honor his word to guide the heroes. His abilities are directly tied to his unique form. His immortality and his robotic body give him resilience, as shown when he is shot through the head and can simply have a new one screwed on. His power, however, is not primarily combat-oriented but rather economic and political, wielded through his wealth, his control of trade, and his extensive network of influence.
