Description
Keroberos, almost always called Kero or Kero-chan, is a magical guardian and a central figure in Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie. He is the self-proclaimed "Beast of the Seal," entrusted long ago by the powerful sorcerer Clow Reed with the duty of guarding the Clow Cards. In the film, which takes place while Sakura is still in the process of recapturing the scattered cards, Kero has already chosen Sakura Kinomoto as the Cardcaptor and serves as her guide and companion.

Physically, Kero is almost always seen in his "borrowed" or "false" form. In this state, he resembles a small, plush, stuffed animal, with bright yellow-orange fur, large ears, and tiny white wings. This diminutive appearance allows him to live inconspicuously in Sakura's home, where he sleeps in a special bed made for him inside her desk drawer. It is in this cute, mascot-like form that he accompanies Sakura on her trip to Hong Kong, usually staying hidden in her bag or nearby.

Personality-wise, Kero is a complex figure who balances his ancient, serious responsibilities with a distinctly modern, gluttonous, and often egotistical character. He is bossy and demanding but is genuinely devoted to Sakura's success and well-being. His greatest loves are video games and sweets, particularly cake and chocolate, a fondness that often distracts him from more pressing magical matters. Despite his small size, he is remarkably intelligent and well-versed in mysticism, with a strong ability to sense magical auras and provide crucial analysis of the Clow Cards and other supernatural phenomena. Underneath his cheerful and sometimes boisterous exterior, he is deeply loyal and takes his duty as a guardian seriously, though he prefers "loud fun" and hates being sad or lonely.

In the story of the film, Kero's primary motivation is to assist Sakura in her role as the Cardcaptor. When Sakura wins a trip to Hong Kong, Kero is suspicious but goes along with the group. His fears are confirmed when Sakura is plagued by prophetic dreams and they encounter two malevolent bird-like spirits. Kero's knowledge and experience become crucial to the plot when he reveals the tragic backstory of the film's antagonist, a vengeful sorceress named Madoushi. He explains that Madoushi was once a fortune-teller whose business and pride were destroyed by Clow Reed's superior magic, and that her hatred was so powerful it trapped her spirit in another dimension. This information provides Sakura with the understanding she needs to confront the spirit not with force, but with sympathy. Throughout the dangerous encounters, Kero remains by Sakura's side, offering advice and encouragement, proving himself to be far more than just a plush toy.

Kero's key relationships in the film mirror those from the series. His most important bond is with Sakura. Though he often complains about her clumsiness or nags her about her duties, he speaks of her with pride and expresses genuine fear for her safety. He is also frequently seen interacting with Tomoyo Daidoji, who delights in filming him and dressing him in adorable costumes, a treatment he secretly enjoys far more than he lets on. His relationship with Syaoran Li, the rival Cardcaptor, is one of respect mixed with rivalry. While Kero sometimes finds Syaoran's serious and competitive nature annoying, he acknowledges the boy's skill and magical heritage, especially when Syaoran's mother, the powerful sorceress Yelan Li, assists them.

While Kero does not undergo a major personal transformation in the film, his role reinforces his development as a steadfast protector. The movie highlights his transition from simply a guide for capturing cards to a true friend who supports Sakura through an emotional and dangerous trial. He demonstrates that his loyalty and wisdom are as important as his magical power.

Regarding his notable abilities, in his small plush form Kero can fly and use his magical senses, but his offensive and defensive powers are limited. Despite his size, he possesses surprising strength and is able to carry Sakura short distances. In the series and film, his more formidable powers, such as his ability to breathe fire, summon powerful energy barriers, and transform into his true form—a massive, majestic, winged lion with a metal chest plate —are tied to the recovery of specific Clow Cards that hold his power, such as The Firey. Since he has not yet regained his full power at this point in the story, these spectacular abilities are not on display in the movie. Nonetheless, his capacity for magical sensing, flight, and his vast knowledge of Clow Reed's magic are essential to helping Sakura navigate the perils of Hong Kong and ultimately resolve the conflict with the vengeful spirit.
