Movie
Description
Kero, whose full name is Keroberos, is the magical guardian of the Clow Cards who takes on a small, plush-like appearance with yellow-orange fur, large ears, and small white wings. In this form, he resembles a stuffed animal or a small lion cub. His true form, which he cannot access for much of the series, is that of a massive, wing lion with a metal chest plate and a large red gem.
Kero has a bossy and demanding personality, often acting as the self-appointed leader and guide for Sakura in her duties as Cardcaptor. He is extremely gluttonous, with a particular love for sweet foods such as cake, cookies, and chocolate, and he spends much of his free time playing video games. Despite his small size, he possesses a big ego and loves being filmed by Sakura's friend Tomoyo, often boasting about how cool he looks in the recordings. He speaks with an Osaka dialect, which he learned because the Clow Book was kept in Osaka for a long time. Kero deeply cares about Sakura and genuinely believes in her potential to become the new Master of the Clow, but he struggles to express serious emotions and prefers to focus on fun and indulgence rather than wallow in sadness.
Kero's primary motivation is to fulfill his duty as the guardian of the Clow Cards. He feels responsible for the cards being released when Sakura opened the book, so he appoints her as the Cardcaptor and helps her recapture them. He also serves as a mentor, providing Sakura with essential information about the cards and their abilities. As the series progresses and more cards are captured, Kero looks forward to the Final Judgment, the event that will determine the true master of the Clow, though he is anxious about the outcome.
In the first Cardcaptor Sakura movie, Kero accompanies Sakura and her friends on their trip to Hong Kong. His role is primarily as an adviser and companion. When Sakura and her friends become trapped in another dimension by the water sorceress Madoushi, Kero provides the crucial backstory, explaining that Madoushi was a fortune teller who had a fierce rivalry with Clow Reed after his predictions proved more accurate than hers. She has been waiting for Clow Reed to release her from the dimension, and Kero helps Sakura understand the situation so she can confront the spirit and save her friends.
Kero has a strong relationship with Sakura, acting as both a demanding mentor and a close friend. He often scolds her but also comforts her when she is sad and protects her and her friends from danger. He sees Sakura as more than just a master, considering her a good friend. Kero frequently argues with Syaoran Li, who calls him a stuffed animal, while Kero calls Syaoran a brat. Despite their bickering, Kero is accepting of Syaoran's help in capturing cards. Kero also has a relationship with Yue, the other guardian of the Clow Cards. They have known each other for a very long time, and although Kero sometimes feels jealous that Clow Reed favored Yue, he is deeply concerned for Yue's well-being and often confides in him.
Throughout the series, Kero undergoes some development. Initially unable to access his true form or most of his powers, he begins to regain them as Sakura captures cards associated with the sun, specifically The Firey and The Earthy. He starts in a weakened state where he can only fly and sense magical presences, but eventually he can breathe fire and transform back into his powerful true form at will. Kero also learns to trust Sakura's abilities more and becomes less overbearing as a guide.
In his borrowed form, Kero is still able to fly and has considerable strength for his size, once carrying Sakura in his mouth. His primary ability is sensing the presence of Clow Cards and other magical auras. He can also breathe small fireballs and create energy barriers for protection. In his true form, he commands the elements of fire and earth and has jurisdiction over half of the Clow Cards, including The Light, The Firey, and The Earthy. His powers are based on the sun and western magic, making him the counterpart to Yue, who draws power from the moon.
