Description
Meran Blue is the male protagonist of the anime Brigadoon. He is a Monomakia, a type of bio-engineered life form, specifically designated as a Gun-Swordsman. Originating from the titular world of Brigadoon, Meran is discovered by the young girl Marin Asagi in an ampoule enshrined at the Nezu Shrine near her home in 1969 Tokyo, and he is released to serve as her protector.
Physically, Meran is tall and humanoid in appearance, clad in blue armor with mechanical wings that allow him to fly. His body is a weapon; his right arm is a sword and his left arm is a laser gun. For tasks requiring dexterity, he possesses an additional, smaller arm that emerges from his waist to handle objects or tend to wounds. Part of his skin is composed of metal that can extend to cover his face during combat for protection. Despite his formidable appearance, he relies on a mundane fuel source: rice, which he consumes in massive quantities, famously being able to eat up to fifty bowls in a single sitting.
True to his nature as a purpose-built weapon, Meran initially exhibits a blunt, mechanical demeanor and lacks a fundamental understanding of human emotions. He speaks little and is driven almost entirely by the mission he has been given to protect Marin, a role he fulfills with stoic and unwavering dedication. His way of thinking and speaking is straightforward, often making him unable to grasp sarcasm or idioms.
His central motivation is this duty to safeguard Marin, who is later revealed to be the Creis, a vital component of a ritual called the Day of Pasca that keeps the worlds of Earth and Brigadoon from colliding. Although he begins by fighting for her solely out of obligation, his motivations gradually shift as he lives among the quirky and warm-hearted residents of Marin's tenement house, the Nagaya. Through these daily interactions and his deepening bond with Marin, he slowly opens his eyes to compassion, friendship, and eventually love, leading him to fight of his own volition.
Throughout the story, Meran acts as Marin's primary bodyguard against the relentless attacks of other rogue Monomakia who descend from Brigadoon. His role places him in near-constant battle, often sustaining severe injuries to protect her. A significant figure in his past is Kuston Brown, whom he refers to as his little brother, indicating a shared history from their training days. His relationships with the other surviving Gun-Swordsmen from his cohort, Pyon and Eryun Garnet, are complex, involving both camaraderie and tragic conflict.
Meran experiences significant development over the course of the series. Starting as an almost robotic entity who only exists to execute a mission, living with Marin and the people of the Nagaya awakens his latent humanity. He transitions from a being who simply obeys orders to one capable of forming emotional attachments and making personal sacrifices. This evolution culminates in the second half of the series, where he unlocks the ability to transform into Hyper Meran, a more powerful form.
His notable abilities are almost entirely combat-oriented. In addition to his built-in sword and gun, flight, and a regenerative healing factor, Meran is a skilled and calculating fighter who rarely loses his cool in battle. He can be relentless, but fear and anger do not control him unless a loved one is threatened, at which point his fighting style can become berserk and far more aggressive.
