Description
Hotsuma is a character from the anime Tenchi in Tokyo, where he serves as one of the primary antagonists. He is a humanoid servant summoned by the main villain Yugi, alongside another servant named Tsugaru. In his standard form, Hotsuma is distinguished by his long blond hair and attire reminiscent of a scientist.
Hotsuma's personality is defined by a cold and manipulative nature, though he is not without a personal agenda. He develops a notable infatuation with Ryoko, one of Tenchi's companions, and much of his behavior is directed towards gaining her attention and affection. He is cunning and patient, willing to engage in long-term schemes to achieve his goals rather than relying on brute force alone.
His primary motivation is to serve Yugi's overarching plan to conquer or destroy Tenchi's world, but he also harbors a personal desire to win Ryoko for himself. To this end, he works to isolate her from her friends and allies, hoping to turn her back to her former life as a space pirate. He successfully exploits Ryoko's heartbreak after she witnesses Tenchi kissing another girl, Sakuya, and convinces her to leave Earth and return to a life of crime.
As a key antagonist, Hotsuma's role in the story is to drive a wedge between the main characters, specifically targeting Ryoko. He orchestrates attacks on the Masaki Shrine and other events to win the trust of the group before revealing his true intentions. After taking Ryoko away, he frames the Galaxy Police officers Mihoshi and Kiyone for a betrayal they did not commit, further isolating Ryoko from her past support system. He also reminds Ryoko that Tenchi has moved on with Sakuya whenever she shows signs of missing her life on Earth.
Hotsuma's most significant relationship is with Ryoko. His seemingly helpful demeanor hides a possessive and controlling interest in her. After she overhears him speaking negatively about her to Yugi, she realizes she has been tricked and decides to leave him. This leads to a violent confrontation where Hotsuma, following Yugi's orders, attempts to kill Ryoko by destroying his own ship. Another key relationship is with his master Yugi, whom he serves and reports to, though his personal obsession with Ryoko occasionally drives his actions.
Throughout the series, Hotsuma undergoes a clear development from a trusted ally to a revealed enemy. His downfall begins when Ryoko discovers his deception about her friends. In the final confrontation, Ryoko gains the upper hand in their battle. In desperation, Hotsuma reveals a monstrous transformation, which may be his true form or simply a powered-up state, granting him increased speed and strength. Despite this newfound power, he is ultimately defeated and vaporized by Ryoko, who is empowered by a gem she received from Tenchi and her own strong feelings.
Regarding notable abilities, Hotsuma is a capable fighter and strategist. He possesses the power to create illusions or pocket dimensions, as demonstrated when he conjures a mysterious mansion known as the Manor of Vows to trap Tenchi and Sakuya. He is also able to exert mind control over others, forcing them to act against their will. When his humanoid form proves insufficient, he can transform into a large, powerful monster that moves with surprising speed and can deflect energy attacks. Despite these formidable powers, his overconfidence and Ryoko's determination lead to his destruction.
