Description
Mondo Ooya is a main protagonist of Mon Colle Knights. He begins as an ordinary elementary school student who has a strong interest in the Monster Collection trading card game and harbors a crush on his classmate Rokuna Hiiragi. When Professor Ichiroubei Hiiragi invents a way to travel to the parallel Mon World, Mondo is recruited alongside Rokuna to become a Mon Colle Knight. He accepts the role quickly after overcoming his initial shock at discovering a parallel universe and the unconventional outfit he is given.
Mondo is adventurous, determined, and courageous. He provides much of the physical strength and endurance for the team. He is also impulsive and has a distinct habit of flirting with other girls, especially those he perceives as needing help. This often leads him to adopt a heroic pose, sometimes removing his shirt, which triggers Rokuna’s jealous and violent reactions. His flirtatious behavior is depicted as a reflexive trait rather than a lack of care for Rokuna.
His primary motivation is to locate the six Mon items scattered across the elemental realms of Mon World. He hopes that gathering these items will create a permanent connection between the human world and Mon World, fostering peace and friendship between the two realms. Like Rokuna, he believes the worlds should coexist harmoniously.
A unique ability granted to Mondo as a Mon Colle Knight is the power to merge with friendly monsters by chanting a specific phrase. When merged, he can aid the monster in combat, though he also feels its pain. He frequently merges with water-type monsters but also works with creatures of other elements. He has a particular fondness for dragons, though his most constant companion is a small, chibi winged horse he meets early in the series. With Mondo’s help, this creature grows into a full-sized pegasus and remains a loyal friend and partner.
Key relationships include his bond with Rokuna, who is both his teammate and girlfriend. He also works closely with Professor Hiiragi. His main rivals are Prince Eccentro and his subordinates, especially the underling Batch, with whom Mondo has a personal antagonism. Over the course of the story, Mondo develops a deeper understanding of the Mon World and its inhabitants, forming lasting friendships with various monsters and the angelic guardians. His growth is seen in his increasing competence in adventures and his willingness to protect the monsters and the cause of unity.
Little is revealed about Mondo’s home life in the human world, but as the series progresses, he appears to spend most of his time with the Hiiragi family. A distinctive physical trait is the criss-cross bandage on his forehead, the origin of which is never explained.
