Description
Professor Ichiroubei Hiiragi, commonly referred to as Professor Hiiragi, is a scientist in the anime Mon Colle Knights who dedicates his research to the Six Gate World, an alternate dimension inhabited by monsters. He is the one who confirms the existence of this world and studies its hidden treasures, the six Monmon Items, which are connected to the elements of fire, wind, water, earth, holy, and dark. To allow travel between the human world and the monster world, he builds the Suttobi Dragon, a vehicle that carries the main characters on their journeys. He is the father of Rokuna Hiiragi and lives with her in his laboratory house; his wife, Rokuna's mother, has left the family by the time the story takes place.
In personality, Professor Hiiragi is an eccentric and somewhat chaotic mad scientist. He is highly energetic and becomes completely absorbed in his experiments, often spending long hours in his laboratory. This dedication means he has little parental authority over his daughter, and Rokuna frequently ends up correcting him or managing the household instead of the other way around. He is not intentionally neglectful, as he still cares for her and makes an effort to attend her school plays, but his work consistently comes first in his mind. He is also motivated by a desire for recognition, hoping that revealing the Six Gate World to the human world will bring him acclaim and awards.
His central motivation is to collect the six Monmon Items before his rival, Count Collection, can obtain them. In his hands, the items would be used to peacefully connect the Six Gate World with the human world and allow humans and monsters to coexist. Count Collection seeks the same items for the purpose of controlling all monsters or reshaping reality, which places the two scientists in direct opposition.
In the story, Professor Hiiragi acts as the catalyst for the entire adventure. His discovery of the passage to the Six Gate World and his invention of the means to travel there lead him to recruit his daughter Rokuna and her friend Mondo as the Mon Colle Knights. He guides their quest, provides them with equipment and transportation, and serves as the adult researcher who documents their encounters with the monsters of the other world. His simultaneous breakthrough with Count Collection establishes the central competition of the series.
His key relationships follow from this role. With Rokuna, he shares a warm but imperfect bond, as his single-minded work habits often leave her to take charge at home. With Mondo, he acts as a mentor-like figure who entrusts the young boy with the knight mission. With Count Collection, he has a rivalry between two scientists who opened the same path to the monster world and now compete for the same treasures. His work also defines his connection to the Six Gate World itself, which he treats as both a source of wonder and an object of study.
Over the course of the series, his role develops from that of a scientist who simply opened a gate to someone who must deal with the consequences of that discovery. His goal of peaceful coexistence between the two worlds remains the guiding purpose of the knights' side of the conflict, and his bond with his daughter endures despite the distance created by his work.
In terms of abilities, Professor Hiiragi's strengths are entirely scientific. He understands the dimensional barriers between the worlds, researches the nature of the Monmon Items, and builds the technology that makes travel possible, including the Suttobi Dragon and various devices used by the knights. He does not take part in combat himself, instead functioning as the brains, inventor, and transport provider behind the Mon Colle Knights' missions.
