Description
In Sailor Moon S: The Movie, the character known as Bunny is the civilian identity of the superheroine Sailor Moon. Her real name is Usagi Tsukino, and she is a junior high school student living in the Azabu-Jūban district of Tokyo. She lives with her parents and her younger brother. In her everyday life, she is a cheerful and well-meaning girl who often struggles with her studies, is prone to tears, and has a love for eating and sleeping. Her name is a pun that means "Rabbit of the Moon," reflecting her signature hairstyle which is styled into two buns resembling rabbit ears.
Underneath her ordinary exterior, Bunny is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, the heir to the ancient Silver Millennium kingdom of the Moon. She is destined to become the future ruler of Earth, Neo-Queen Serenity. Her companion is a talking black cat named Luna, who serves as her mentor. She is also the leader of the Sailor Guardians, a group of magical warriors who protect the Earth from evil. Her primary motivation in the film, as in the series, is to protect the planet and the people she loves, driven by a powerful sense of empathy and a belief in the inherent goodness of others.
In Sailor Moon S: The Movie, Bunny’s role is to command her team in stopping the invasion of an extraterrestrial ice queen named Princess Snow Kaguya, who plans to freeze the entire Earth. The film’s main plot, however, focuses on Luna, who has fallen in love with a human astronomer named Kakeru. While Bunny and her fellow Sailor Guardians work to stop the Snow Dancers, Kaguya's henchwomen, from freezing the city, Sailor Moon ultimately faces the Snow Queen directly. Although this story features the Sailor Guardians as a group, the spotlight remains on Luna's personal drama, with Bunny’s role being to provide the final heroic solution to the conflict.
Her key relationships in the film are consistent with the series. She fights alongside her closest friends and teammates, including Sailors Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. Tuxedo Mask, the alter ego of her destined partner Mamoru Chiba, also supports her. However, the film places less emphasis on her romantic relationship with Mamoru and more on her role as the compassionate leader who ultimately defeats the antagonist not just with force, but with an appeal to her better nature. Her relationship with Luna is that of a guardian and friend, and it is Luna’s emotional conflict that forms the heart of the story, with Bunny providing the magical power to resolve it.
The movie does not present a major character development arc for Bunny herself, as the narrative is more focused on Luna. However, it does showcase her established growth from a crybaby into a resilient and determined fighter. She displays the selflessness and courage that define her character, refusing to give up even when faced with a powerful enemy. Her signature motivation of fighting for love and justice is on full display, and her inherent trait of spreading hope is crucial to the film’s resolution. By the film's conclusion, she uses her power to grant Luna a single wish, allowing the cat to experience a night as a human.
As for notable abilities in this film, Sailor Moon wields the power of the Legendary Silver Crystal, a powerful artifact that is the source of her strength and the very core of her being. When she needs more power to defeat Princess Snow Kaguya, she activates the Holy Grail to evolve into her more powerful form, Super Sailor Moon. This transformation gives her enhanced strength, though even this proves insufficient against the ice queen at first. Ultimately, she prepares to unleash the full, immense power of the Legendary Silver Crystal and, with the combined strength of the other eight Sailor Guardians, channels that energy to destroy Kaguya and her ice crystal. Her abilities are fundamentally tied to her emotions and her bonds with her friends, making her more powerful when fighting in conjunction with them.
