Description
Princess Snow Kaguya, also known as Princess Snow Kaguya, is the primary antagonist of the 1994 Japanese animated film Sailor Moon S: The Movie. She is presented as an extraterrestrial ice entity, a humanoid alien whose true form is intrinsically linked to a comet that travels through space. Her sole objective is to freeze planets and add them to a personal collection of snow-covered worlds, with Earth being a prized target she had long desired to claim.
Her motivations are driven by a cold, acquisitive cruelty rather than any sense of vengeance or redemption. Princess Snow Kaguya appears to view the transformation of living worlds into lifeless, frozen spheres as a form of art or accumulation, showing no regard for the inhabitants she would extinguish. She had attempted to encase the Earth in ice once before, but was thwarted by the power of the Legendary Silver Crystal, which melted her previous assault and banished her across the galaxy.
In the film's story, she returns to Earth to resume her conquest. However, a fragment of her comet has been separated from her, and she cannot begin her planetary freezing without it. She dispatches her silent, winged servants, the Snow Dancers, to scour the planet for the missing shard. The fragment is eventually found by a young astronomer named Kakeru Ozora, who keeps it in his observatory. The shard, which is a piece of her very essence, attaches itself to Kakeru's life force and begins to slowly drain his energy, making him critically ill.
Princess Snow Kaguya ultimately confronts Kakeru at his observatory to retrieve the fragment. The astronomer, entranced by her ethereal and regal appearance, mistakes her for the moon princess from the Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. She callously takes the shard, and knowing it is linked to his vitality, she throws it into the ocean. This act creates a massive ice crystal that begins to freeze the Earth while continuing to drain the remainder of Kakeru's life force, accelerating his path toward death. Her role in the narrative is that of a remorseless force of nature, an obstacle that the Sailor Guardians must overcome not only to save the planet but also to rescue the life of an innocent man caught in her scheme.
Princess Snow Kaguya's personality is defined by arrogance and sadism. She displays a clear desire to make her enemies, the Sailor Guardians, suffer before defeating them, and she revels in the power she wields over the Earth and its people. She shows no character development throughout the film, remaining a static and purely antagonistic figure whose defeat is the resolution of the plot. Her key relationships are primarily with her creations, the Snow Dancers, who serve as her minions and foot soldiers. These dancers are extensions of her will, designed to carry out her search and assist in freezing the planet. While she briefly interacts with Kakeru Ozora, she views him only as an incidental vessel for her lost property, with no personal or emotional connection to him. Her relationship with the Sailor Guardians is purely adversarial, and she is ultimately destroyed when the combined powers of all nine Sailor Guardians unify to activate the full, purifying force of the Silver Crystal.
Princess Snow Kaguya possesses formidable and extensive abilities centered on absolute control over ice, snow, and cold. She can generate massive, planet-enveloping snowstorms and blizzards at will. Her power allows her to command frost, hail, and freezing temperatures, and she can project two circular bursts of frigid energy from her hands as an offensive attack. Furthermore, she can unleash a much more powerful energy blast from her chest, though this more devastating attack requires a short time to charge. The comet shard she seeks is not merely a tool but an amplifier of her innate abilities, greatly enhancing her power over ice. She also demonstrates the capacity to revive destroyed Snow Dancers, using the energy from the crystallized fragment to restore her servants. The ultimate expression of her power is the immense ice crystal that simultaneously serves as an engine for global freezing and a parasitic drain on a victim's life force.
