TV-Series
Description
Bridget Verdant is the English name for the character known in the original Japanese version as Lettuce Midorikawa. She is one of the main heroines and the third member to join the team of girls who have been infused with the DNA of endangered animals to protect the planet. Her genetic makeup is merged with that of a finless porpoise, a cousin of the dolphin, which grants her powers associated with water. In the English adaptation, her last name Verdant is a reference to the color green, which is her signature color.

Bridget is a young teenager, around thirteen to fourteen years old, and her birthday is April 29th. In her civilian form, she has light skin, dark green hair that she often wears in two long braids, and blue eyes hidden behind a pair of thin glasses. She is a student at Okumura Junior High School and works as a waitress at Café Mew Mew alongside her fellow team members.

Personality-wise, Bridget is known for being extremely shy, timid, and polite. She always speaks formally, even to her close friends and family, and is considered sweet and gentle by those who know her. At the start of the series, she suffers from a profound lack of self-confidence and is frequently taken advantage of and bullied by a group of three popular girls at her school, referred to as the Three Beckies, who pretend to be her friends but only order her around. Her initial desire for friendship leads her to tolerate this mistreatment, as she is afraid of being alone. She is also quite clumsy, which becomes apparent when she works at the café, as she occasionally breaks dishes. Despite her shyness, she is portrayed as intelligent.

Bridget’s primary motivation is her deep longing for genuine friendship and a sense of belonging. She is initially terrified of her Mew Mew powers, fearing they will make her a freak and drive people away, confirming her worst fears about never being able to make real friends. Her journey throughout the story involves overcoming these insecurities and learning to accept herself.

Her role in the story is as a key member of the team. She is introduced when her uncontrolled powers manifest as she vents her anger and sadness at her school at night, leading the other Mew Mews to believe she is a ghost. After a confrontation where she attacks Ichigo and Mint, they manage to break through her fear and comfort her, showing her that they accept her. Following this, she joins the team and begins working at their base of operations, Café Mew Mew. Her primary role in battles is to use her water-based abilities to support the team and fight against their enemies, the Chimera Animas.

Bridget develops several key relationships over the course of the series. She becomes very close friends with the team leader, Ichigo Momomiya, and the refined Mint Aizawa, whose encouragement helps her gain confidence. She also forms a particularly strong bond with the energetic and much younger Pudding Fong, whom she views as a little sister. Her family, including her parents Yomogi and Eizaburou and her younger brother Uri, are very positive and supportive, always encouraging her to be herself and assuring her she will find real friends. She also develops a romantic crush on the sharp-tongued café manager and co-creator of the Mew Project, Ryou Shirogane. This leads to a moment where she uses her powers to become a mermaid and saves his life, even kissing him, though her feelings are ultimately not fully returned as Ryou harbors affections for someone else.

Bridget experiences notable development throughout the story. She starts as a victim of bullying who cannot stand up for herself and is frightened of her own power. Through the unconditional acceptance and friendship of the other Mew Mews, she slowly blossoms into a more confident and self-assured young woman. Her experiences, including her unrequited feelings for Ryou, help her grow and become stronger, learning to value herself for who she is.

As Mew Lettuce, Bridget Verdant possesses several notable abilities. Her primary weapons are a pair of green castanets called the Lettuce Castanets. She uses them to perform her main attack, known in various versions as Ribbon Lettuce Rush or by names referencing surging waves and tides. As her powers are water-based, she has the ability to manipulate water with her mind. Interestingly, while she cannot swim in her civilian form, her porpoise DNA grants her exceptional swimming abilities when transformed. Furthermore, when she comes into contact with a special substance known as Mew Aqua, she can transform her legs into a finless porpoise tail, becoming a mermaid, which grants her the ability to breathe underwater and move with incredible speed and grace. In her transformed state, her hair lightens to a pale green, her eyes become green, she no longer requires her glasses, and she wears a green, flower-petal-like strapless dress with long white antennae extending from her head.
