Description
Berry Hong, also known by her Mew form name Mew Berry, is a character introduced in the manga sequel Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode. Her Japanese name is Berry Shirayuki. She is a twelve-year-old girl with a slim build, long, straight blonde hair, and dark brown eyes that are often described as having a reddish tint. In her daily life, she attends an all-girls private middle school, which requires a long commute, and she works part-time as a waitress at Café Mew Mew. Her civilian wardrobe tends toward a girly style, but she is frequently seen in her school's sailor-style uniform. When she transforms into Mew Berry, her eyes turn a solid red, and she gains the physical traits of the two animals whose DNA she carries: the long ears of an Amami Black Rabbit and the tail of an Andes Mountain Cat. These features are cream-colored, and her outfit consists of a cream dress with red accents, including a ribbon tied around her tail with a small bell. Her weapon is the Loveberry Rod, a staff adorned with a strawberry and a rabbit face.

Berry becomes the sixth member of the Tokyo Mew Mews under unique circumstances. She follows Ryou Shirogane to the team's base to thank him after he saves her from a fall, but she accidentally runs through a new, experimental DNA infusion machine, which grants her powers. This incident makes her the first and only Mew Mew to be infused with the genetic material of two endangered species. Her arrival is timely, as the team's original leader, Ichigo Momomiya, has left for London to study abroad. Consequently, Berry is asked to take over as the temporary leader of the Mew Mews, a role she accepts despite her initial fear and lack of confidence.

In terms of personality, Berry is fundamentally cheerful and kind. While she is initially terrified and overwhelmed by her sudden transformation and new responsibilities, she is characterized by her perseverance and hard work, which allow her to grow into a confident and effective leader for the team. She is also described as outgoing and optimistic, though she can behave in a more reserved and composed manner at school to fit in with her surroundings. Her innocence and youth are often reflected in her speech patterns. One of her key motivations is to protect others and fulfill her role as a Mew Mew, but she also has a personal goal of enjoying her school life and making friends after transferring to a new school.

A significant part of Berry's story involves her relationships, particularly with her childhood friend Tasuku Meguro. Tasuku has a habit of sneaking into her room every morning to hug her, a ritual that began after the death of her mother, with whom she previously lived alone with her father. Throughout the series, Berry develops romantic feelings for Tasuku, which initially confuse her as she comes to terms with this change in their dynamic. She also forms a close bond with Ichigo Momomiya, who supports her transition into the role of leader and even performs a special combination attack with her called the Ribbon Doubleberry Check. Berry also has a robotic companion named Ucha (originally designated R2003), who provides her with guidance and transforms into her Loveberry Rod.

Berry's role in the story is that of the new protagonist and leader of the Mew Mews in the absence of the original team. She quickly becomes the primary target of the antagonists in à la Mode, a group called the Saint Rose Crusaders, because she is considered the second strongest Mew Mew. Her development throughout the narrative focuses on her journey from a frightened, ordinary girl to a courageous and reliable hero. As she adapts to her new life, she learns to master her unique abilities. Her transformed state grants her enhanced agility and flexibility from her feline DNA, as well as sharp hearing and the ability to jump to great heights from her rabbit DNA. Her signature solo attack is called the Ribbon Loveberry Check. Berry represents a new generation of Mew Mew, combining the traits of two different animals to protect the world.
