Description
Mimori Kiryu is a central character in the anime s-CRY-ed, where she serves as a young scientist and researcher for the organization HOLY. She is the daughter of Tadanori Kiryu, a wealthy investor who is the primary financial backer of HOLD and its special Alter user unit, HOLY. Born in the Lost Ground, she moved to the mainland as a child but returns at the beginning of the story at the age of eighteen. Her return is motivated by a desire to reunite with Ryuho, a childhood acquaintance who is now a powerful Alter user and a member of HOLY. Mimori is highly intelligent and academically gifted, having completed graduate school at a young age. Her work within HOLY focuses on the scientific study of Alter powers, and she is the only member of the organization who is not an Alter user herself.

Mimori’s personality is defined by her kindness, strong moral compass, and genuine desire to help others. She is empathetic and often serves as a voice of reason and compassion in a world marked by conflict and corruption. Unlike many around her, she does not view the Native Alters as threats but instead becomes increasingly troubled by HOLY’s brutal treatment of them. This leads her to investigate the secrets behind the Alter phenomenon and the true nature of the Lost Ground. When she discovers unsettling truths about how Alters are being exploited, she is imprisoned but later rescued by the eccentric HOLY member Straight Cougar. Despite being advised to leave the Lost Ground for her own safety, she refuses, feeling a deep sense of responsibility toward the people living there and especially toward Ryuho.

Mimori’s motivations are rooted in her childhood fascination with Alter powers, which began when she witnessed Ryuho accidentally create a stone object using his Alter. She kept that stone as a pendant and wears it throughout the series as a symbol of her connection to him. Her primary goal is to bring out the kinder side of Ryuho, who has become cold and ruthless under the influence of HOLY. This puts her in a complicated dynamic with Scheris, another HOLY member who also cares for Ryuho. Later, as the story progresses, Mimori becomes more than just a passive observer. She actively aids Kazuma, the main protagonist, by diagnosing and treating Kanami’s illness, and she works with the disgraced former HOLY agent Asuka Tachibana as a smuggler, bringing supplies to the Natives. Her role shifts from a naive researcher to a brave whistleblower who risks her social standing and safety to expose corruption within the power structures of both HOLY and the Mainland government.

Key to Mimori’s character development is her growing disillusionment with the organization she works for and her eventual decision to sever ties with her privileged mainland upbringing. After spending eight months in hiding and working with the resistance, she reunites with Ryuho, who has undergone his own transformation after losing his memory and later regaining it with a new perspective. The Ryuho she meets is no longer the cold enforcer she feared but someone who has begun to protect the Natives himself. This reunion reinforces her resolve to stay in the Lost Ground permanently, and by the end of the series, she chooses to live as an Inner, fully embracing the community she once only studied from a distance.

In terms of abilities, Mimori does not possess Alter powers. Her strengths lie in her scientific knowledge, analytical mind, and medical diagnostic skills. She uses these assets to assist both Kazuma and others in critical situations, such as when she quickly identifies and treats Kanami’s illness. Her empathy and ability to see the humanity in both Alters and ordinary people make her a valuable moral anchor for the more violent and conflicted characters. She does not fight physically but acts as a catalyst for change by revealing the truth about the Lost Ground and challenging the system from within, ultimately helping to dismantle the corrupt leadership alongside Kazuma and Ryuho.
