In terms of appearance, Kanami has long brown hair commonly tied in a ponytail, often with a ribbon, and green eyes. Her typical attire includes an orange coat over a dark top, paired with shorts and socks.

Kanami’s personality is defined by a mature, kind, and determined nature that belies her young age. She often takes on the role of the responsible caretaker in her household with Kazuma, managing the finances and frequently scolding him for his irresponsible behavior, though she does so calmly rather than by raising her voice. She is a hardworking individual who contributes to their survival by performing tasks at a local farm. While she is generally gentle and peace-loving, she possesses a quiet strength and a willingness to stand up for others, as seen when she tries to protect an elderly woman from being beaten.

Kanami’s primary motivation throughout the narrative is her deep care for Kazuma. She initially views him as something of a lazy bum, unaware that he is an Alter user and that his absences are due to dangerous mercenary work. When she discovers the truth about him being a Native Alter, she experiences fear but ultimately accepts him, choosing to care for him regardless of his nature. Her determination to see Kazuma again becomes a driving force, leading her to leave her village with a friend in search of him. Over time, her feelings for Kazuma grow into love, which she eventually confesses to him.

Kanami's most notable ability is her own unnamed Alter, which grants her powerful empathic and telepathic capabilities. These dreams are later revealed to be psychic connections to Kazuma, through which she unconsciously witnesses his battles and emotional struggles. As her ability develops, she can actively sense the anima or spiritual essence of individuals while awake. Her Alter is very desirable, as it can be forcibly amplified and exploited by others, as demonstrated when Kyouji Mujou kidnaps her to extract information and augment his own power. In the anime's finale, she uses her power to telepathically confess her love to Kazuma. In the manga adaptation, her character differs as she is portrayed as a normal human without Alter powers.
