Description
In the world of s-CRY-ed, Kazuma, often called Kazu by his close friend Kanami, is a sixteen-year-old Native Alter User who calls the lawless region known as the Lost Ground his home. He operates as a freelance problem-solver alongside his partner, Kimishima, taking on jobs that involve dealing with other Alter Users for a fee. He has no known last name and lives in an abandoned dentist's office with Kanami, whom he treats as a surrogate younger sister.

Kazuma possesses a headstrong and impulsive personality, often acting on instinct rather than lengthy deliberation. He is famously hot-blooded and prone to shouting during confrontations, but this surface-level abrasiveness belies a sharp, quick-thinking mind. Despite his claims of being a selfish mercenary who will do anything for the right price, he demonstrates a consistent pattern of selflessness. He is known to give large portions of his earnings to those in need, such as a boy whose father was injured, and he has a profound disdain for those who bully the weak or infringe upon the freedoms of others. His deep hatred for the organization HOLY and its agents stems from their systematic oppression of the Lost Ground's inhabitants. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, and any threat to them, especially Kanami or Kimishima, acts as an immediate catalyst for his rage. He also has a notable respect for animals, often expressing regret when forced to intrude on their territory or fight them.

His primary motivation throughout the story is twofold. On a personal level, he develops an intense and bitter rivalry with Ryuho, a top officer of HOLY. This rivalry is ignited when Ryuho easily defeats him and looks down on him, hitting two of Kazuma's biggest berserk buttons: being underestimated and having his freedom restricted. On a broader scale, he is driven by a desire to protect his home and the innocent people living there from the tyrannical control of the mainland. As the series progresses, these motivations evolve. Following the death of his friend Kimishima, Kazuma descends into a deep state of grief and rage, becoming a more jaded and hardened individual who participates in underground fighting rings. His goal shifts from simple rivalry to a burning need for revenge. Ultimately, his actions are centered on rescuing Kanami when she is kidnapped, demonstrating that his protective instincts override even his personal grudges.

Kazuma's role in the story is that of a powerful protagonist who embodies the rebellious spirit of the Lost Ground. He is a direct foil to Ryuho, who represents order from the mainland. His actions, particularly his escape from HOLY custody and his subsequent battles, escalate the conflict between the Natives and HOLY, forcing both sides to acknowledge him as a major threat. He evolves from a low-level nuisance to one of the most dangerous Class A, and eventually Class S, Alter Users in the conflict. His journey forces him to confront loss and his own limits, eventually leading to an uneasy alliance with his former rival to face a greater common enemy.

His key relationships define much of his character arc. His bond with Kanami Yuta is that of a protective older brother, and her safety is his ultimate priority. Kunihiko Kimishima serves as his strategic partner and closest friend; his death is the single most devastating event in Kazuma's life, plunging him into a violent depression. His relationship with Ryuho is central to the series, evolving from pure hatred and a desire to defeat him into a grudging mutual respect and a partnership between equals. He was also a student of Straight Cougar, a HOLY member who taught him the "Bullet" techniques that define his fighting style.

Kazuma's character development is marked by his struggle against his own nature and the consequences of his power. Initially, he fights for fun and money, but he matures as he witnesses the cruelty of HOLY and sacrifices made by his friends. After Kimishima's death, his enthusiasm for battle is replaced by a grim sense of duty and suicidal resignation. He begins to overcome this despair during a fight with Ayase, where a spiritual vision of Kimishima reminds him of his will to live and protect others. By the series's end, he has learned to temper his reckless anger with purpose, setting aside his personal rivalry to save the world and finding a new reason to fight.

Kazuma's notable abilities stem from his Alter, which he calls "Shell Bullet." This is an alloy-type Alter that primarily manifests as armor. In its first form, Shell Bullet covers his right arm in golden armor and creates three red fins on his shoulder. Kazuma can break these fins to perform super-powered punches known as his "Bullets": Shocking First Bullet, Annihilating Second Bullet, and Exterminating Last Bullet. Each broken fin releases a progressively stronger attack, but he can only use three before needing to recharge. His second form, attained after absorbing a piece of a powerful Alter called The Crystal, replaces his arm entirely with a more powerful orange and red mechanical arm. This form features a large propeller that grants him flight and an aperture on his fist that can absorb Alter energy from the environment, allowing for a more powerful and repeatable "Shell Bullet Burst" attack. The final form, Proud Fist, covers his entire body in streamlined golden armor resembling a samurai or lion. In this state, his propeller is replaced by a flexible, whip-like tail, and he can launch devastating attacks from both fists. The constant evolution and use of his Alter comes at a severe physical cost. Over time, his arm becomes covered in stress fractures and scale-like scarring, his right eye remains permanently closed when not using his full power, and sections of his arm appear to chip away into black voids, highlighting the dangerous toll his power takes on his body.
