Description
Claude C. Kenni is one of the primary protagonists of the anime Star Ocean EX. He is a young ensign serving in the Earth Federation, working aboard the spaceship Calnus under the command of his father, the famous Admiral Ronyx J. Kenny. His story begins during a mission to investigate a mysterious energy field on an unknown planet, where he disobeys orders and approaches a strange machine. This act results in him being accidentally teleported far from home to the undeveloped, fantasy-like planet of Expel.
Upon arriving on Expel, Claude finds himself in a forest where he encounters and rescues a young native girl named Rena Lanford from a monster using his advanced weapon, a phase gun. The residents of Rena's village, Arlia, mistake him for the prophesied Legendary Warrior or Warrior of Light, a hero from the stars destined to save their world from a catastrophic meteorite known as the Sorcery Globe. Initially, Claude rejects this title, knowing he is merely a lost officer, but he agrees to investigate the Sorcery Globe, partly in the hope that its secrets might help him find a way back home.
Personality-wise, Claude is depicted as a young man who is fundamentally humble, honest, and altruistic, but he struggles with significant self-doubt. This lack of confidence stems from growing up in the imposing shadow of his celebrated father, and he is deeply self-conscious about the possibility that others might view his career advancements as a result of nepotism rather than his own merit. Consequently, he carries a chip on his shoulder and is determined to prove that he is capable and his own person. He can be brash and impetuous at times, but this is balanced by a noble and courageous nature that compels him to help those in need. Notably, Claude also displays a jealous streak, particularly regarding Rena's close childhood friend, Dias Flac.
Throughout his journey on Expel, Claude forms deep bonds with several companions. His relationship with Rena Landford is the most significant, evolving from a chance meeting into a strong friendship and a growing romantic affection that becomes a source of emotional strength for him. He also travels with the treasure hunter and heraldic magic user Celine Jules, and later the swordsman Ashton Anchors, who holds Claude and his friends responsible for a mishap that results in two dragons fusing to Ashton's back. His relationship with his father, though physically distant after the accident, is a key part of his background, and his stern but caring father tries to help him succeed, though Claude initially dislikes his Federation post due to the special treatment he receives as the admiral's son.
In terms of abilities, Claude begins with his Earth Federation-issued phase gun, a powerful laser weapon that is mistaken for the legendary Sword of Light. However, after this weapon runs out of ammunition, he is forced to adapt to Expel's more primitive technology and turns to swordsmanship. He proves to be a quick learner, showing a natural talent for combat by mastering techniques like the Kuuhazan attack after seeing it performed only once by the skilled swordsman Dias Flac. His role in the story is the driving force behind the quest to solve the mystery of the Sorcery Globe, which has caused natural disasters and the appearance of monsters all over the planet. Through his adventures and his friendship with Rena, he begins to grow, find his own strength, and move past the burdens of his father's legacy.
