Description
Raiko, also spelled Raigo in some releases, is one of the three demon gods who serve Yakumo, the displaced ruler of the Netherworld, in the film Yu Yu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report. He functions as Yakumo's most trusted subordinate among the group and is deployed to stop the heroes as they work to activate the spiritual energy sites that would restore the Spirit World and prevent the Netherworld from overtaking the Human World.

In terms of background, Raiko belongs to the Netherworld, a plane of existence that was destroyed and banished into cold space ages ago by Lord Enma. He remained loyal to Yakumo through that catastrophe and joins the campaign to recover the source of Netherworld energy and carve out a new dominion in the Human World. Along with the other demon gods, he is a seasoned demon warrior who serves as one of the major obstacles in the film's conflict.

Personality-wise, Raiko is deeply devoted to Yakumo and carries out his orders without question. Like many demons of the Netherworld, he takes pleasure in witnessing the evil within humanity and in drawing that darkness out for his own amusement. He is confident in his abilities, particularly his supernatural eye, and he enjoys psychological games, believing that his inherited powers make him superior to opponents such as Hiei.

His motivations are straightforward: he wants to restore the Netherworld under Yakumo's rule and is eager to use his talents to break and control others. He seeks no redemption and no goal beyond serving his master and demonstrating the strength of his demonic heritage.

Raiko's defining trait is his Jagan, the demonic third eye. Unlike Hiei, who possesses an artificial Jagan, Raiko was born with a natural one. Through this eye, he can awaken the dark side of an opponent and place them under his control, essentially brainwashing them into obedience. This makes him a mentally dangerous adversary rather than merely a physical one, as he prefers to dominate his victims through their own hidden impulses.

In the story, Raiko's role is that of an antagonist to Hiei. When Hiei advances through the mission, Raiko intercepts him and attempts to enslave his mind with the Jagan. Hiei deliberately allows the brainwashing to take hold as a trick, then reveals that he is still in control of himself and kills Raiko. Raiko's defeat removes one of the three demon gods blocking the heroes' path and demonstrates Hiei's resistance to mental domination.

Development-wise, Raiko is a minor antagonist and undergoes no significant personal change during the film. His reliance on his natural Jagan and his underestimation of Hiei lead directly to his downfall. His key relationship is with Yakumo, whom he serves faithfully, and his most notable conflict is with Hiei, a fellow Jagan user who proves capable of outwitting him.
